比赛的日子终于来到了。到处挤满了观众，大家议论纷纷，有的支持乌龟，有的支持兔子。有的说：“乌龟是上次比赛的冠军，这次比赛当然是它赢。”有的说：“人分别三日，就得另眼相看。兔子一定会战胜乌龟的！”在“人山人海”中，还有几个啦啦队，动物们的喊叫声都快把天震塌下来。猴子裁判把兔子和乌龟拉到起点上，对它们说：“比赛为了公平起见，先是一段斜坡路，接着是一个湖泊，最后是一段公路，终点就在公路上插红旗的地方。”说完，随着一声枪响，比赛开始了。
比赛刚开始，乌龟立刻缩进龟壳，从斜坡上滚了下去，它想：“只要在这一段领先，而第二段又是湖泊，就一定能赢。”它高兴不已，边滚还边哼着歌呢！
兔子一见乌龟高兴得不得了，心想：“尽管高兴吧，只要我在这段小心点，不被摔倒，第三段我就可以冲刺了。至于第二段，看着办吧。”兔子一边想一边跑，这时由于它分心，不小心踩到了一堆沙子，就跟着乌龟一起滚下去。这一滚可不得了，兔子没有龟壳，全身起了很多“包”。乌龟见兔子滚得那么惨，于是笑着说：“兔子呀兔子，没有壳就不要滚嘛！真是自找苦吃。你现在虽然超过了我，但看你呆会怎么站起来。”说到这儿，乌龟在龟壳里捧腹大笑起来。
不一会儿，兔子和乌龟双双来到湖岸边。兔子忍着巨痛站起来。观众们看了兔子那副惨样，有的笑得合不拢嘴，有的担心兔子有没有事……兔子穿上了游泳衣，戴上了救生圈，和乌龟正准备下水。突然它们发现了一块牌子，上面写着：小心食人鱼。它们一看，都吓得脸色苍白。乌龟一下坐到地上，心想：该怎样过才可以呢？绕道而行又太远了，我肯定跑不过兔子。兔子正起脚准备绕道，这时它发现了两只小船，于是它立刻跳上船去，拿起船桨，向对岸划去。乌龟见还有一只小船，也跳上去向对岸划去。
刚来到湖中心，兔子和乌龟的距离开始拉大了。乌龟见自己划不过兔子，想：如果我用手来划一定会快点的。心动不如行动，乌龟扔下了两只船桨，用自己的手划了起来，这下可快多了，一下子就赶上了兔子，却引来了一大群“食人鱼”。还没等乌龟反映过来，乌龟的小船早就被“食人鱼”啃去了一大半。乌龟心急如焚，为了逃生，它跳上了兔子的船，对它说：“兔子老兄，你就载我到对岸吧，算我欠你一个人情。”兔子听了乌龟的话，不假思索，就欣然地答应了。
到了对岸，兔子就立刻冲刺起来，它的速度快得像离弦的箭，把乌龟远远地抛在后头。观众认为兔子肯定会赢，因为兔子离终点只有不过十几米的距离。
这兔子停住了脚步。原来兔子饿了，发现赛道旁有块菜地，里面种满了绿油油的白菜。兔子一下便跳了进去，啃食着香甜的白菜。而乌龟却在努力地向终点冲击。
终点离乌龟越来越近，乌龟乐极了，心里想：“兔子老兄，对不起了，我要赢了。”而此时兔子还在吃白菜，一只小灰兔出现在兔子面前，对它说：“你不去比赛，来偷吃我的白菜干嘛？”
兔子一听，恍然大悟，立刻向终点冲击。而乌龟只离终点两米了。
在动物们的欢呼声中，兔子和乌龟同时到达了终点。裁判给它俩戴上奖牌。动物们都把它们抬起来……
从此，乌龟和兔子成为了形影不离的好朋友。兔子也被“邮政局”再次雇为“邮递员”。
