八零后的我，是从初中开始接触英语的。初中一年级，从字母学起，初听A、B、C的字母英文歌就被这门语言深深的吸引住了，至今对其迷恋不已。作为一名小镇长大的孩子，要想学好英语是多么的艰难，个中滋味可能也就只有我自己知道了。初中学校在小镇上，英语老师大都是师范中专毕业的，没有受过专门的英语专业训练，无论是发音还是语法分析、单词释义，都很难说规范，甚至有些常常是错误的。但就是这些，我还是很感激将我引向这门语言的初中英文老师，宁老师。那时的我，顽皮且对英语充满了好奇，上课常常学得比别人快，但又经常地搞个怪引得哄堂大笑，让老师的课没法继续。对此，宁老师不但没有生气，反而经常的表扬我，让我起来背课文，上黑板去默写单词，推荐课外书给我读以此开阔我的视野。最重要的是，宁老师给我推荐了一些发音方面的书让我去读，找课文的录音带让我去听，去模仿。宁老师说，老师的有些发音也不准确，希望你能通过听这些磁带练好。宁老师的这些话让我至今难忘。真庆幸有这样一位严谨的、谦虚的好老师。我想，我现在英语扎实的基本功与宁老师是分不开的，虽然没从她那学到多少知识，但她的严谨、她的指点、她的包容，鼓励了我。
及至高中，学英语就带了些浓重的功利色彩了。为了高考，整天的题海。老师的讲解，我的看书，也不过是围绕高考做准备，没有太多的印象了，也没有太好的成绩。我再次燃起对英语的兴趣，是大学时期的事了。大学时，虽也要为过英语四六级而考试，但这时的学英语，自由度要大了很多。真正触动我的是大一第一次期末英语考试，当时班里三十八人我考了三十五名，几乎垫底，不服输的性格让我发誓要从头再来。从头再来，说起来豪迈，做起来艰辛。
听力，我曾经的强项，由于高考的不考也退化了很多。这时，我先用收音机坚持每天听校园的广播，校园广播听熟了，我又开始听VOA的慢速英语。到最后，这些都听熟了，我又狠心买了台CD机（现在的小孩可能没见过），买来VOA的常速材料来听，初听一头雾水，很受打击。于是我就先预习文字然后再听，对于每个不熟悉的发音，连读，升降语调，轻重语气都做标记，再反复的听，最后这些都能适应了，应付听力考试自然是OK了。
阅读方面，我先是精研大学英语课本，将里面的每一个词从文章里的用法到其他的`释义用法都逐一解决；再到文章里的每一句话的语法特点，句子的构成，都详细分析；最后到作者的谋篇布局，所传达的思想我都仔细品读。精读之外，更多的是读泛读课本以及一些课外的读物。《大学英语》，在当时是本不错的杂志，在图书馆发现的，好长时间内都迷上了这本杂志，里面有对四六级考试的一些解析，更多的是一些美文可以品读，地道的语言，优美的文笔，都深深地吸引了我。记得还从校园书店购得一本《名家名作百篇赏析》，里面的文章简短，却都美轮美奂，感人至深，海伦凯勒的《假如给我三天光明》，马丁路德金的《我有一个梦想》，这些名篇至今还能出口成诵。随着阅读量的增大，我的词汇量与语言能力也得到了大幅度的提高。此时的我，在班里已是英语的佼佼者了，四六级都以高分通过。我对英语的感情，也由最初的雪耻，变成了深爱。在别人看来学英语功成名就的时候，我却更加疯狂地爱上了英语。这时的目的当然不是考试了，而是被英语以及由这门语言而表达的思想所吸引了。闲来无事，我读了大量的英文小说与散文。狄更斯的《双城记》，菲茨杰拉德的《了不起的盖茨比》，艾迪生《威斯敏斯特大教堂的遐思》等，这些作品让我在了解当时社会、异国文化的前提下，更多了一些对人性，对人生的思考。有些东西，读译作是品不到的。
