A man once went abroad on his travels, and when he came home he had wonderful tales to tell of the things he had done in foreign countries. Among other things, he said he had taken part in a jumping-match at Rhodes, and had done a wonderful jump which no one could beat. “Just go to Rhodes and ask them,”

he said; “every one will tell you it's true.” But one of those who were listening said, “If you can jump as well as all that, we needn't go to Rhodes to prove it. Let's just imagine this is Rhodes for a minute: and now -- jump!”

Deeds, not words.

When the boys came home that day, Mrs Wen took some chopsticks from the kitchen.

“Try and break these,” she told them. Neither of them could break the chopsticks. Then she gave them one chopstick each.

“Now try and break it, ”she said. They both broke the chopstick easily.

When the son heard this, he went home happily.

Not long after, the wife returned home from the market. Zeng Zi tied up their fat pig, took out a shining sharp knife and prepared to kill it. When his wife saw this, she hurriedly held Zeng Zi by the hand and said: “What's the matter with you? I was only trying to humour the child.”

Zeng Zi said seriously: “How can you cheat a child? The child is still small and doesn't understand things. He only follows the example of his parents. Now you cheat him, then he will follow your example and cheat others. Furthermore, when a mother cheats her child, the child will no longer trust his mother. Then, how can you educate the child well?”

Having said this, Zeng Zi raised his knife and killed the fat pig.
