Hold Fast To Your Dreams

I have a dream today.

I have a dream that one day every vally shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.

Wow, what a dream it has been for Martin Luther King. But the changing world seems telling me that people gradually get their dreams lost somehow in the process of growing up, and sometimes I personally find myself saying goodbye unconsciously to those distant childhood dreams.

However, we meed dreams. They nourish our spirit; they represent possibility even when we are dragged down by reality. They keep us going. Most successful people are dreamers as well as ordinary people who are not afraid to think big and dare to be great. When we were little kids, we all dreamed of doing something big and splashy, something significant. Now what we need to do is to maintain them, refresh them and turn them into reality. However, the toughest part is that we often have no ideas how to translate these dreams into actions. Well, just start with concrete objectives and stick to it. Don’t let the nameless fear confuse the eye and confound our strong belief of future. Through our talents, through our wits, through our endurance and through our creativity, we will make it.

Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly. Hold fast to dreams, for when dreams go, life is a barren field frozen with snow. So my dear friends, think of your old and maybe dead dreams. Whatever it is, pick it up and make it alive from today.

Self-Confidence Is Essential to Success

Nothing succeeds like confidence. When you are truly confident,it radiates from you like sunlight, and attracts success to you like a magnet.

It's important to believe in yourself.Believe that you can do it under any circumstances, because if you believe you can, then you really will. The belief keeps you searching for answers, which means that pretty soon you will get them.

Confidence is more than an attitude. It comes from knowing exactly where you are going and exactly how you are going to get there. It comes from acting with integrity and confidence. It comes from a strong sense of purpose. It comes from a strong commitment to take responsibility, rather than just letting life happen.

One way to develop self-confidence is to do the thing you fear and to get a record of successful experiences behind you.

Confidence is compassionate and understanding. It is not arrogant. Arrogance is born out of fear and insecurity, while confidence comes from strength and integrity.

Confidence is not just believing you can do it. Confidence is knowing you can do it.Know that you are capable of accomplish anything you want, and live your life with confidence.

Anything can be achieved through focused, determined effort and self-confidence.If your life is not what you want it to be,you have the power to change it,and you must make the changes on a moment by moment basis. Live your priorities. Live with your goals and your plan of action. Live each moment with your priorities in mind. Act with your own purpose, and you will have the life you want.

As a kid, I spent my summers with my grandparents on their ranch in Texas.

I helped fix windmills, vaccinate cattle, and do other chores.

We also watched soap operas everyafternoon, especially ”Days of our Lives.

“ My grandparents belonged to a Caravan Club, a group of Airstream trailer owners who travel together around the U.S.and Canada.

And every few summers, we'd join the caravan.

We'd hitch up the Airstream trailer to mygrandfather's car, and off we'd go, in a line with 300 other Airstream adventurers.

I loved and worshipped my grandparents and I really looked forward to these trips.

On one particular trip, I was about 10 years old.

I was rolling around in the big bench seat in the back of the car.

My grandfather was driving.

And my grandmother had the passenger seat.

She smoked throughout these trips, and I hated the smell.

At that age, I'd take any excuse to make estimates and do minor arithmetic.

I'd calculate our gas mileage -- figure out useless statistics on things like grocery spending.

I'd been hearing an ad campaign about smoking.

I can't remember the details, but basically the ad said, every puff of a cigarette takes some number of minutes off of your life: I think it might have been two minutes per puff.

At any rate, I decided to do the math for my grandmother.

I estimated the number of cigarettes per days, estimated the number of puffs per cigarette and so on.

When I was satisfied that I'd come up with a reasonable number, I poked my head into the front of the car, tapped my grandmother on the shoulder, and proudly proclaimed, ”At two minutes per puff, you've taken nine years off your life

I have a vivid memory of what happened, and it was not what I expected.

I expected to be applauded for my cleverness and arithmetic skills.

“Jeff, you're so smart.

You had to have made some tricky estimates, figure out the number of minutes in a year and do some division.

” That's not what happened.

Instead, my grandmother burst into tears.

I sat in the backseat and did not know what to do.

While my grandmother sat crying, my grandfather, who had been driving in silence, pulled over onto the shoulder of the highway.

He got out of the car and came around and opened my door and waited for me to follow.

Was I in trouble? My grandfather was a highly intelligent, quiet man.

He had never said a harsh word to me, and maybe this was to be the first time? Or maybe he would ask that I get back in the car and apologize to my grandmother.

I had no experience in this realm with my grandparents and no way to gauge what the consequences might be.

We stopped beside the trailer.

My grandfather looked at me, and after a bit of silence, he gently and calmly said, “Jeff, one day you'll understand that it's harder to be kind than clever.

Spring Festival is the Chinese New Year Day. I enjoy it very much. On the Chinese New Year Day, some of our relatives come to visit us. They often give me some lucky money. Then I would play with their children. We often play firecrakers together, which is quite interesting.

At night the whole family would sit together, talking and watching TV programmes. Sometimes we take pictures of the whole family members in the house. I often go to bed late during the holiday, but I dont feel fired at all. I think the Spring Festival is the most enjoyable day for every family in China.

THE PRESIDENT:

Hello, everybody! Thank you. Thank you. Thank you, everybody. All right, everybody go ahead and have a seat. How is everybody doing today? (Applause.) How about Tim Spicer? (Applause.) I am here with students at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia. And we've got students tuning in from all across America, from kindergarten through 12th grade. And I am just so glad that all could join us today. And I want to thank Wakefield for being such an outstanding host. Give yourselves a big round of applause. (Applause.)

I know that for many of you, today is the first day of school. And for those of you in kindergarten, or starting middle or high school, it's your first day in a new school, so it's understandable if you're a little nervous. I imagine there are some seniors out there who are feeling pretty good right now -- (applause) -- with just one more year to go. And no matter what grade you're in, some of you are probably wishing it were still summer and you could've stayed in bed just a little bit longer this morning.

I know that feeling. When I was young, my family lived overseas. I lived in Indonesia for a few years. And my mother, she didn't have the money to send me where all the American kids went to school, but she thought it was important for me to keep up with an American education. So she decided to teach me extra lessons herself, Monday through Friday. But because she had to go to work, the only time she could do it was at 4:30 in the morning.

Now, as you might imagine, I wasn't too happy about getting up that early. And a lot of times, I'd fall asleep right there at the kitchen table. But whenever I'd complain, my mother would just give me one of those looks and she'd say, ”This is no picnic for me either, buster.“ (Laughter.)

So I know that some of you are still adjusting to being back at school. But I'm here today because I have something important to discuss with you. I'm here because I want to talk with you about your education and what's expected of all of you in this new school year.

Now, I've given a lot of speeches about education. And I've talked about responsibility a lot.

I've talked about teachers' responsibility for inspiring students and pushing you to learn.

I've talked about your parents' responsibility for making sure you stay on track, and you get your homework done, and don't spend every waking hour in front of the TV or with the Xbox.

I've talked a lot about your government's responsibility for setting high standards, and supporting teachers and principals, and turning around schools that aren't working, where students aren't getting the opportunities that they deserve.

But at the end of the day, we can have the most dedicated teachers, the most supportive parents, the best schools in the world -- and none of it will make a difference, none of it will matter unless all of you fulfill your responsibilities, unless you show up to those schools, unless you pay attention to those teachers, unless you listen to your parents and grandparents and other adults and put in the hard work it takes to succeed. That's what I want to focus on today: the responsibility each of you has for your education.

I want to start with the responsibility you have to yourself. Every single one of you has something that you're good at. Every single one of you has something to offer. And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is. That's the opportunity an education can provide.

Maybe you could be a great writer -- maybe even good enough to write a book or articles in a newspaper -- but you might not know it until you write that English paper -- that English class paper that's assigned to you. Maybe you could be an innovator or an inventor -- maybe even good enough to come up with the next iPhone or the new medicine or vaccine -- but you might not know it until you do your project for your science class. Maybe you could be a mayor or a senator or a Supreme Court justice -- but you might not know that until you join student government or the debate team.

And no matter what you want to do with your life, I guarantee that you'll need an education to do it. You want to be a doctor, or a teacher, or a police officer? You want to be a nurse or an architect, a lawyer or a member of our military? You're going to need a good education for every single one of those careers. You cannot drop out of school and just drop into a good job. You've got to train for it and work for it and learn for it.

And this isn't just important for your own life and your own future. What you make of your education will decide nothing less than the future of this country. The future of America depends on you. What you're learning in school today will determine whether we as a nation can meet our greatest challenges in the future.

'You've got to find what you love,' Jobs says

This is the text of the Commencement address by Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Computer and of Pixar Animation Studios, delivered on June 12, 2005.

I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation. Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That's it. No big deal. Just three stories.

The first story is about connecting the dots.

I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. So why did I drop out?

It started before I was born. My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife. Except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl. So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking: ”We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him?“ They said: ”Of course.“ My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final adoption papers. She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college.

And 17 years later I did go to college. But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents' savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months, I couldn't see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didn't interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.

It wasn't all romantic. I didn't have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends' rooms, I returned coke bottles for the 5¢ deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the 7 miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple. I loved it. And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on. Let me give you one example:

Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country. Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed. Because I had dropped out and didn't have to take the normal classes, I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this. I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great. It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can't capture, and I found it fascinating.

None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life. But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac, its likely that no personal computer would have them. If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do. Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.

Again, you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.

There is no sunlight, no warmth of life; there is no rain, no grain of Fengdeng; no water, there would be no life; no parents, there would be no us. No family ties and friendship, the world would be a lonely and dark. These are very si-mp-le truth, no one would understand, but we often lack an ideological and psychological Thanksgiving.

”Who made the heart-inch grass, at a three Chunhui“, ”Who knows盘中餐, A Journey into“, which is often when we recite the poem, is to talk about Thanksgiving. The water-en, Yongquan phase reported; title hitch grass, reported in favor of these idioms has been telling us is to Thanksgiving.

Parents to give our lives, we should know how to Thanksgiving and the actual action to return them; teacher gives us the knowledge, we should know how to Thanksgiving and to return their accomplishments; motherland gives us the peace and tranquility of a soil, we should know how to give their Thanksgiving and naturally given We hope that we should know how to Thanksgiving and love to return.

Although self thank Dae, but Thanksgiving is not only to keep in mind, but also in the line to pay. You would like to thank the people who must be the expression of that mind, because it is not only expressed his gratitude, but also a spiritual exchange. In this exchange, we will be a result of such息息相通the world has become very beautiful.

Famous scientist Qian motherland in order to return to his mother's ex-feeding, rejected the U.S. government hired him and all the honorary title, decided to return to poverty and backwardneof the motherland, and engaged in science, the modernization of China's national defense building outstanding contributions.

People who know how to Thanksgiving, there is a modest person Zhide; people who know how to Thanksgiving, there is a fear of heart; the people know Thanksgiving is a deep understanding of life person.

Institute of Thanksgiving, we know how to love; Institute of Thanksgiving, thinking learned; Institute of Thanksgiving, it is to understand the world and life.

Although Father and I were very close, we had a normal father- and- son relationship.

I believe that in each family, the relationship between father and son is like a tiny stream, without any wonder while full of feelings and emotion.

Father used to tell me what makes a man.

Sometimes we would discuss this to the early hours of the next morning sipping on our cups of tea.

During the evenings, he taught me to be honest and kind-hearted.

He told me: Learning to be a man is the most valuable thing in one's life.

His words turned out to be the brightest stars in my sky and lit up my path when I did not know which way to turn.

Father was an expert in history and mastered a clear insight into everything.

He managed to make mundane historic events into interesting stories and told them to me with great patience.

We even argued about these events at times.

His stories turned out to be a warm spring breeze and they melted the ice in my thoughts.

Later, Father got seriously ill.

He never expressed his suffering to me.

On the contrary, it was my studies, my health, and my future that he was really concerned about.

He told me: The real nature of a man is in being staunch.

Man should learn to carry the burden of grief.

And then he passed away in piece, leaving me a succession of recollection.

His words echo in my mind.

All he did was plain and simple, but rooted in my heart.

As soon as I gathered them together, Father became a great book.

I met Father in a dream.

He smiled, and told me in his gentle voice: Boy, treasure your mother; treasure everything that you possess.

Father.

Thank you!

The topic of my speech today is “My Attitude to Pursuit of Fashion in School”.

Now in our school there is a hot pursuit of fashion.

Some students live a very expensive life.

They have the same hairstyles as their favorable stars and wear top brand of clothes and shoes.

Some use expensive mobile phones.

The reasons why they do so are as follows.

Firstly, they hope to look smart and special.

Secondly, they want to win others’ admiration and respect.

In addition, it makes them feel cool .

As far as I am concerned, we students should hold the right sense of values.

We should practice thrift in our daily life because it is one of our Chinese traditional virtues.

What’s more , it is advisable for us to donate some pocket money to the Hope Project so that those poor children in rural areas can return to school to receive normal education.

Last but not least, it is the inner beauty rather than our appearance that makes us respectable.

Thank you for listening!
