Dear xx,

“Women aren’t suited for such hard subjects.” my friend Seung-woo told mewith a smug smile. Seung-woo didn’t think that mathematics was a field forwomen. Although he was my age and wasn’t tied down by most traditional beliefs,he believed that only men could be true mathematicians. The majority of peoplein my country, South Korea, believe the gender stereotype that women areinherently inferior to men in mathematics. I strongly disagree with thisoutdated notion. Women are just as capable of outstanding mathematicalachievement as men, and I am determined to help disprove gender stereotypesthrough my example.

Mathematics has always given me a deep sense of satisfaction. Even inelementary school, I was attracted to the precision and logic inherent inmathematical formulas. I devoured as much mathematical information as I could, collecting theorems of mathematicians such as Gauss and Euclid like otherstudents collected stamps. I had the opportunity to test my skills and knowledgein high school, when I competed in several national math competitions, includingthe Korea Mathematical Olympiad. My strong showing in these venues, along withmy top math grades and perfect math score on the Korean SAT, bolstered myconfidence in my abilities. I was proud to prove to others that I was capable ofperforming at the highest levels.

Despite my strong interest and achievement in mathematics, it has beendifficult for me to realize my potential due to the Korean educational system, which emphasizes cramming for tests instead of critical understanding. Moresignificantly, Korean social biases against women in the fields of math andscience have discouraged me from pursuing my love of mathematics. Thus, I wantto study in the United States, where I will be able follow my dream withoutthese constraints. For about a year, I have taken English language courses at auniversity in Washington, D.C., where I have gained a glimpse of Americanacademic life from the inside. I am very impressed by American students’devotion to their studies and the system’s ability to support each student’sgoals. I am therefore especially interested in attending Boston College, which,in addition to offering outstanding math and science courses, is renowned forits emphasis on cultivating students’ full development, or “cura personalis.” AtBoston College, I will be able to focus on my goal of becoming an excellentmathematician.

I am determined to succeed, but I know that I must overcome manychallenges. Sometimes, when I feel discouraged by the obstacles I face as aKorean woman in mathematics, I imagine what my life will be like ten years fromnow. Armed with a Boston College degree, I will visit my old friend Seung-woo.We will have corresponded over the years, so he’ll already know about the manymathematics articles published in my name, and he will be well aware of theinternational acclaim they received. I will savor the day when Seung-woo admitsthat I was correct in believing that I could succeed as a mathematician. I willbe proud to know that partly due to my achievements, the door to increasedopportunities for women in math and science has swung open a little bitwider.

Yours sincerely.

Dear ___:

Marketing experts like to classify people into different generation groups, believing that people of the same age share similar value and attitudes. I agreewith those experts'' theory in that it emphasizes the connection between thecircumstances of one's upbringing and one's later outlook on life. Mypersonality, talents, values, even career choice have been profoundly influencedby my family life and upbringing in Taiwan.

My name is Peter Huang and I’ve grown up in Ten-Mou, a multiculturalneighborhood in suburban Taipei. During the early years of my childhood, myparents exerted a profound influence over my development. Though neither of themwas involved in business, by watching their integrity and hard work, I learnedmore about the true meaning of success than I would ever have in anyclassroom.

My father is an Air Force colonel. He joined the R.O.C Air Force at the ageof 14, struggling to achieve his personal best as the supply division chief ofthe R.O.C. Air Force Academy. Unlike some officers in the military, who dependedon family relationship and privilege to get promoted, my father gained hisposition by hard work and assiduity. He thus emphasized the importance ofindustriousness when it came to my education. When I was 10, I attended a speechcontest. During the week before the contest, my father and I spent two hours aday together, organizing the lecture content, adjust my rhythm, and rehearsing.I was a shy, soft-spoken child, and found speaking in public difficult at first. But through my father's patient efforts and his believe in the rewards of hardwork, I gradually became an excellent public speaker and won many of thecontests that followed. As a result of the experiences such as this, I learned avery strong work ethic and emulated some of my father's best characteristics -perseverance and dedication.

These qualities served me well as I entered mandatory military service inTaiwan and faced many difficult situations. I once led a squad to enact thetyphoon disaster relief action in Nan-tou. We had one week in which to salvage afactory that was half-buried in mud. As the squad commander, I not onlysupervised, but also participated in the demanding and seemly endless diggingwork. And each night, after an exhausting work when all other soldiers wereasleep, I spent extra hours checking if there were sufficient supplies andmaking plans for the next day's relief action. When I finally laid down tosleep, I could not help but reflect on how much I had developed, as both aperson and a leader, since that first speech contest.

My mother has a warm and kind personality, and has always reached out tothe expatriates in our neighborhood. She organized a language exchange club withthe American students in local colleges, hoping to increase understanding ofTaiwanese and American cultures through the exchange of language. I took part inthe club when I was still in elementary school. This childhood multi-culturalexperience instilled in me an active personality and willingness to interactwith people of different cultures. In particularly, it strengthened my interestin American and my desire to work and live there one day.

My mother’s emphasis on international exchange and cooperation has led meto work for the Fulbright Foundation in Taipei as a research assistant. Thisposition allows me to interact with educational associations in the UnitedStates and to take part in international conferences. I once participated in aventure capital seminar in Hsin-Chu, working on the issue of graduate leveltechnology management education with representatives of major high-techcompanies and academic institutions. Last November, I represented the Foundationin an international Tele-conference in Taipei. The conference was conducted bothin English and in Chinese and was hosted by the Prime of Ministry of Education. My work has also given me the opportunity to know and become friends withexceptional Fulbright scholars from the United States.

While my childhood years shaped my character, it was my high school andcollege years which led to my interest in business. 1988 was both a determiningyear to my career choices and a turning point in Taiwan's economy. As peoplefamiliar with Taiwan's modern economic history know, the exchange rate of theNew Taiwan Dollar to U.S. Dollars moved from 40:1 to 25:1 in that year under theoverwhelming pressure of American government. Thus meant that the traditionaladvantage of Taiwan's economy, low labor costs, was no longer our strength.People everywhere were talking about the future of Taiwan's economy. Out of ayoung man's passion, I wanted to contribute my talent and effort to my country. That was the time at which I made up my mind that someday, I will makeTaiwan-made products famous world-widely, like those produced by IBM, Intel, orMicrosoft.

This teenage naive patriotic dream transformed into an interest in businessadministration and economics after I graduated from Taipei First Senior HighSchool. I focused my college study on manufacturing administration andeconomics. From four years of lectures, seminars, and in-factory study in thedepartment of Industrial Engineering at National Formosa University, I acquiredskills in quality insurance, manufacturing planning and control, and factoryimprovement and diagnostic methods. In my economic class, I learned how prices, preferences, and incomes affect people's demand of goods from the microeconomic.I also acquired knowledge of how various factors - government policies, currencyexchange rate, and balance of international trade - affect a country's economicsgrowth. My interest in business, however, is not limited to industrialengineering and economics. In my junior year, I also took 6 credits ofaccounting courses and learned the knowledge of basic accounting principles, financial statements, and managerial accounting. To acquire a more thoroughunderstand of management information systems, I chose “Alumni AssociationDatabase Management System for Department of Industrial Engineering” as mygraduate activity project. From each step of developing the database system, Ilearned solid skills in FoxPro programming and enterprise demand analysis.

I am thankful that my parents provided me with an environment thatencouraged me to develop my personality and an intellect for which I amremembered. With a deeply-instilled work ethic, strong interpersonal skills, anda high level of motivation, I believe I will enrich the professional and socialenvironment at your esteemed Buchman School and continue to grow as a expert inhigh-tech industry.

Yours sincerely,

Dear x,

Having thoroughly enjoyed the study of English Language at A Level, Ibelieve I have a secure academic foundation with which to approach a degreecourse in this subject with confidence and enthusiasm. The English Languagetakes a fundamental and crucial role in enhanced communication between differentsocial groups, and to read English would, therefore, be extremely beneficial toboth the development of my communication skills and my ability to express ideasand opinions

Additionally, a course in English at this level would provide me with anopportunity to further my knowledge of the theory and historical basis of thelanguage - each of these being aspects of the course that particularly interestme. I also look forward to studying the practical application of English invarious social contexts, and the ways in which language has evolved anddeveloped over time. I hope that successful completion of an English degree willbe advantageous to me when pursuing a career in marketing and advertising - afield I aspire to enter upon leaving university

In addition to my A Level courses, I have pursued various interests, bothin and out of school - including the study of both theoretical and instrumentalmusic to Grade V standard, by means of school lessons. Playing the 'cello hasallowed me many opportunities to participate in numerous orchestral concerts andsolo performances, which I feel have increased my confidence and improved myability to communicate with others - by performing and interacting as part of anensemble. This experience has also allowed me to enhance my awareness of musicin general - especially of composers originating from the Baroque period

My part time job as a waitress has also made me more able to co-operatewith others (through both colleague and customer interaction), and has improvedmy ability to take initiative and be independent. I have found the work to be arewarding and invaluable experience - as both a source of finance, and as agateway through which to enter the field of employment

Over the past three years, I have become extremely interested in graphicdesign and html programming. These skills have provided me with paid work in theform of website design for local businesses - through which I have improved mycapability to meet deadlines and work to a schedule, and encouraged myself toset personal challenges, learn new skills and meet new people. Myself-motivation, creativity and self-expression have also benefited from thisexperience - all valuable qualities, which I believe are particularly relevantwhen regarding the nature of course I have chosen

On the whole, I believe myself to be a generally sociable, dedicated andself-disciplined student, although I can be overly competitive at times. I haveenjoyed my A Level studies so far, have gained a great deal from them, andbelieve that I have the determination and ability to enjoy a successfuluniversity career.

Dear x,

In the summer of 20x, on a bright afternoon, I stepped into the high schoolgate as the first place in the city's high school entrance examination. In ablink of an eye, hundreds of days passed, and the days of exploring the OlympicGames seemed to have not gone far, and the curtain of studying abroad had openedagain, beckoning me to interpret the splendor of life again.

Regarding the years before high school, my most vivid memory is that fromelementary school to junior high school, at the end of each semester, I had togo home with a certificate of “three good students” and a stack of books asprizes. In the meantime, although I have experienced several changes of schooltransfers and class teachers, this “honorable tradition” of mine has never beeninterrupted. After entering the high school and being selected for the scienceexperiment class, I cherish my time even more. Diligence, study, and progresshave become my motto, and my academic performance has always been among the bestin the school.

In studying, my greatest hobby and pleasure is thinking. I rarely accept acertain knowledge without thinking, but always try to explore the connection andentanglement between knowledge points and knowledge points, the relationship andmutual proof between existing knowledge and new knowledge. I remember the firsttime I learned the content of electric field. I groped for several days betweenelectric charges, electric field lines, spherical shells and plates. I finallyunderstood the inner connection between electric potential, field strength andcapacitance. It felt like a night in the middle of winter. The superheated bathis generally invigorating. This kind of study habit not only made my learningeasier, but also cleared the obstacles for my road of competition. Sinceelementary school, I have actively participated in competitions. In junior highschool, I won two provincial first prizes in mathematics and physics. The richcontent of high school competitions, the depth and breadth of the level, made mefeel like seeing each other late. God rewards hard work. In 20xx, I won thesecond prize in the provincial division of the Physics Olympiad; in 20x, Icontinued to work hard and won the first prize in the provincial division of thePhysics Olympiad and the second prize in the provincial division of thechemistry Olympiad.

Thinking is not only a booster for learning, but also a spice to enrichlife and an incubator for wisdom. Thanks to the habit of reading books since Iwas a child, literary masterpieces, celebrity biographies, encyclopedicknowledge, news essays... are often captured by the eyes that I like to explore, stuffed into the grinding wheel of thinking, and from time to time will produceshort and long Learned.

Although it is often said that thought makes people silent, I am aconclusive counterexample. Whenever I have free time, talking and laughing withmy classmates is one of my hobbies. Not only did I relax my nerves whilelaughing, but also enhanced the friendship between my classmates. A group ofpeople often gather around, and occasionally witty words burst out, and everyonelaughs forward and backward. Because of this, I have a good relationship amongclassmates and many friends. No, less than a month after I entered the highschool gate, I became acquainted with my new classmates every day.

I remember a philosopher said: “Ideal refers to the beacon. Without ideals, there is no firm direction, and without direction, there is no life.” Thirteenyears ago, our family moved from our home in Anhui thousands of miles away tothe reform and opening Zhangjiagang City, the frontier zone, may be the call ofideals. Today, I have grown from a ignorant child to a high school student, anddreaming of Tsinghua has always been my persistent pursuit. I remember when Iwas five or six years old, every time an adult asked me what university I wantedto go to in the future, the answer was almost always “Sunshine University”.Sunshine University, like a green dream across a vast expanse of clear water, once haunted every student's heart on the vast land. However, as the age growsand the state of learning changes, many people gradually hide this unattainabledream back in their hearts. And my dream, instead of being wiped out by theyears, has increased day by day, speeding up jointing.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

JK Rowling had her midnight cafes; Roald Dahl's garden shed has produced wheelbarrows of children's literature and the Bronte sisters roamed the vast expanse of the Yorkshire moors. I personally retreat to a caravan at the bottom of my garden where I find the creative stimulus required to write prizewinning poetry and biology essays alike

Whilst some people are terrified by, or worse, ambivalent towards modern poetry, I fail to remain unmoved after reading Jean 'Brita'Breeze' s “Moonwise” which epitomises the strength of emotion found within a short verse. The beautiful simplicity of the syntax found in such work inspires my creative writin; my poetry has won national competitions and been published in anthologies. Thus my daily diet of literature is a colourful juxtaposition of John Donne's solipsistic love poems, Tess Durbeyfield with her compassionate mentor Hardy and the infamous nobody Mr Pooter. A level English has not dictated but cultivated my critical opinions through analysis of such texts, and so I have been able to appreciate the subtly of fine writing, for example in Joyce's 'Dubliners'

The other subjects I am taking for A level support and complement my continual study of English. The methodology applied to research and evaluate critical arguments undertaken for A level history independent study are paralleled during my consultations with Bradly about Othello. A level biology demands the application of analysis with knowledge, and through my AS physics course I was selected to participate in the Engineering scheme, which enhances my ability to work in a team and to produce reports and presentations. Such attributes were firmly in place after my work experience at the publicity department of Bloomsbury publishing, and in my duties as elected Head Girl

The majority of my extra-curricular activities demonstrate the aptitude I have for English; I write articles for the school magazine, take acting coaching and was the lead role in an all-female production of William Golding's “Lord of the Flies.”I was awarded a sports scholarship for sixth form, play hockey for the school first XI and represent Somerset at the South West England hockey trials. To the amazement and horror of my friends I have started a running club at my college and the sport has given me great self-motivation and a sense of humour. My outside interests are huge, literally. After hockey and orchestra I regularly have to employ my skills as a manipulator to fit my cello and hockey goal keeping kit in the boot

Although some would argue the study for an English degree is not vocational I see the next few years of my life as the opportunity to become immersed in a subject I love. To develop my potential as a writer, I need to analyse and understand the work of those who inhabit library shelves. This course offers me the chance to explore the depths of Shakespeare, unravel the mysteries of Byron and grow in confidence as a literacy critic and person.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

My increasing enthusiasm for news at local, national and international levels, together with my long-standing ambition to become a journalist, makes a journalistic course a natural choice for me. My reason for wanting to enter into the field of journalism can quite simply be put down to a developing awareness of the need for informed and balanced representation of facts

On completing my GCSEs, financial circumstances meant I had to spend three years in full time employment. Returning to education in , I found that the sense of responsibility, focus and determination that had been magnified in the workplace proved very useful in motivating me to pursue my academic and career aspirations. Having demonstrated an ability to adapt to different roles in the workplace, I have had no problems adapting to an academic environment

A great believer in education, I see the role of the journalist as an educating force, an incredibly important one. My study of 'A' Level Government and Politics has served to highlight the importance of informing the public about how decisions being made elsewhere are affecting their lives. It has been particularly interesting to study the role of the media in the political arena and I look forward to studying the role of the media in society, at university

I have always had a natural flair for writing, which has further been improved by my study of 'A' Level English Language and Literature

This subject has given me the skills and versatility to differentiate between and accommodate, the written and the spoken word. It has also given me a deeper understanding of the power of the English language

The development of these skills has extended into my study of 'A' Level Classical Civilisation. Each of my current areas of study has served to nurture my naturally inquisitive nature and improve my analytical and debating skills. Simultaneously, my part time position as a telecommunications assistant has proved useful in enhancing the communication and negotiating skills that are essential for any journalist

Work experience placements at my local newspaper, The South Wales Evening Post and local radio station, The Wave, have confirmed my ambition to enter into the field of journalism. My own use of online and interactive news services has encouraged my interest in the multimedia aspect of journalism. Studying Key Skills in Information Technology has given me the grounding to develop the skills that new communication technology demands. I am currently part of the Communications Team at Gorseinon College, writing articles for the college magazine and presenting news on the college radio station. I thoroughly enjoy working within such a diverse team

Outside of my academic routine I have a number of hobbies and interests. I have a passion for singing and have won many competitions in this field. Art is another talent I have developed considerably since leaving comprehensive school. In the context of my chosen undergraduate programme, I hope that my composition skills will prove useful in studying the role and effects of visual images in newspapers and on television

I attend classes in power yoga on a weekly basis in order to keep fit and look forward to sampling what university has to offer in the way of sports societies and music facilities

Being at an institute of further education has given me the discipline needed for independent learning which I have put into practice by teaching myself Teeline shorthand. Having proven my ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines, I am confident that I am prepared for the challenges of higher education and the world of journalism.

Yours sincerely,

4、GMAT、GRE

2、GMAT

Dear _,

I live in Pakistan-a country destroying itself with bombs, guns and governments' blabber to find justifications for what it is going through;a country where a former president is murdered in public, where the nation's constitution and parliament are suspended at the same time, and where the voice of a common man is unheard.

Since the last few years, I had aspired to become a doctor. The idea of “scalpels,” “opened chests” and “sutures” had always intrigued me.And then it happened! The recent unprecedented events in my country wiped off the dust of disillusionment from my eyes;I lost my will to become a doctor. However, the turmoil in the country led me towards newspapers and news channels, and hence Politics.

As I involved myself into politics,I realized that it is all-embracive-wielding its way over social and economic life-it is the omnipotent of Pakistan. It can mobilize public opinion, gear up propaganda machinery, make or repeal laws and what not.Backed up by public opinion, supported by the majority of the legislators, armed with the means to keep the people in a state of ignorance, political power crosses the limits of dictatorial powers.Political power, like the most powerful intoxicant, makes the persons in power to forget social ethics, political morality and obligations.

Most of the learned youth in this country consider Politics to be “a refuge for the scoundrels” and this derogatory remark may be true if we look at the deceptive and degenerated type of politicians indulging in a dirty game. All these political parties are votaries of democracy, but the way they conduct themselves inside their own parties is nothing but senseless authoritarianism. Therefore a very few students choose to pursue Politics as a profession, but what they don't realize is that if we don't take a stand the system can never be changed. Thus,I want to study Politics so I can come back to my country and contribute what little I can do for my homeland and its people. If I can inspire even a single person,it would be worth it.The world today is growing global. We are now not only to think of our own nation but as and when we think of it,we have to keep the international perception in mind;consequently,I chose Politics with International Relations as one of my courses.

Studying in UK will breed a sense of individuality and self reliance.I would be able to interact with people from everywhere and get to know about their culture. This would not only open new horizons for me,but would also clear some preconceived notions one has about the other.I have always been an active participant of debates.I have participated in 3 Model UN conferences out of which I was awarded with the Best Delegate award in two. I was also one of the two students to be selected from my school to participate in the English Speaking Union '08.Moreover, I've taken part in Parliamentary style debates too. Therefore I believe I can communicate effectively in public and language will not be a barrier in my education.Furthermore, I have worked as an internee at Al-Shifa Eye Hospital for a month in summers. Here I learnt how to deal with patients, use the Auto Ref, handle files and punctuality. We also campaigned to a remote area near Murree where we helped the doctors in examining the patients free of cost.Another experience which taught me a lot was when me and my fellow colleagues volunteered to paint walls for the SOS Children's Village. In addition,I worked with SUNGI (NGO) where a group of 5 of us had to organize an event to pay tribute to 1000 Women for the Nobel Peace Prize.

I enjoy Literature, especially the works of Shakespeare,Tennessee Williams,Thomas Hardy and Andrew Marvell.I'd be delighted to study in a challenging atmosphere where I can focus on my studies.I commit to my work and my ability to think out of the box, keenness for Politics and my perception of things,I understand, gives me an edge over others.I believe in myself, and if provided with an opportunity,I'd make the university proud.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

“Women aren’t suited for such hard subjects,” my friend Seung-woo told me with a smug smile. Seung-woo didn’t think that mathematics was a field for women. Although he was my age and wasn’t tied down by most traditional beliefs, he believed that only men could be true mathematicians. The majority of people in my country, South Korea, believe the gender stereotype that women are inherently inferior to men in mathematics. I strongly disagree with this outdated notion. Women are just as capable of outstanding mathematical achievement as men, and I am determined to help disprove gender stereotypes through my example.

Mathematics has always given me a deep sense of satisfaction. Even in elementary school, I was attracted to the precision and logic inherent in mathematical formulas. I devoured as much mathematical information as I could, collecting theorems of mathematicians such as Gauss and Euclid like other students collected stamps. I had the opportunity to test my skills and knowledge in high school, when I competed in several national math competitions, including the Korea Mathematical Olympiad. My strong showing in these venues, along with my top math grades and perfect math score on the Korean SAT, bolstered my confidence in my abilities. I was proud to prove to others that I was capable of performing at the highest levels.

Despite my strong interest and achievement in mathematics, it has been difficult for me to realize my potential due to the Korean educational system, which emphasizes cramming for tests instead of critical understanding. More significantly, Korean social biases against women in the fields of math and science have discouraged me from pursuing my love of mathematics. Thus, I want to study in the United States, where I will be able follow my dream without these constraints. For about a year, I have taken English language courses at a university in Washington, D.C., where I have gained a glimpse of American academic life from the inside. I am very impressed by American students’ devotion to their studies and the system’s ability to support each student’s goals. I am therefore especially interested in attending Boston College, which, in addition to offering outstanding math and science courses, is renowned for its emphasis on cultivating students’ full development, or “cura personalis.” At Boston College, I will be able to focus on my goal of becoming an excellent mathematician.

I am determined to succeed, but I know that I must overcome many challenges. Sometimes, when I feel discouraged by the obstacles I face as a Korean woman in mathematics, I imagine what my life will be like ten years from now. Armed with a Boston College degree, I will visit my old friend Seung-woo. We will have corresponded over the years, so he’ll already know about the many mathematics articles published in my name, and he will be well aware of the international acclaim they received. I will savor the day when Seung-woo admits that I was correct in believing that I could succeed as a mathematician. I will be proud to know that partly due to my achievements, the door to increased opportunities for women in math and science has swung open a little bit wider.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

Acclaimed as a prodigy, I entered into one of China’s Ivy League universities at 14 and joined the country’s topmost scientific research institution as a graduate student at 19. Now an experienced engineer at 26, I would like to scale still higher intellectual heights by undertaking advanced studies that I hope would put me firmly on the cutting edge of scientific development.

I have demonstrated a keen mind since my early childhood. For years, I consistently outperformed all of my classmates in such challenging subjects as mathematics, physics and chemistry. I was thus chosen to represent either my school or my city in a variety of provincial and national contests of academic skills, in which I won numerous prizes. This impressive academic record put me on academic acceleration several times. That not only enabled me to finish my primary and secondary education in eight instead of the usual twelve years but also sent me at 14 to a privileged class for the gifted at the Chinese University of Science and Technology, a major cradle of the country’s scientific and technological talents.

After two years of basic training in the gifted class, I chose electrical engineering as my major and computer software programming as my minor, convinced that expertise in these fields would stand me in good stead in an era of China’s rapid economic expansion and technological modernization. As you can see from the transcripts of my undergraduate grades, I excelled in both of these areas.

Upon graduation in 1991, I won easy acceptance into the Institute of Electronics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences and became a graduate student at 19, when most Chinese students would be just starting their university education. At this institute, I narrowed my academic interest down and focused it on the area of human and artificial intelligence, where the courses I took were deliberately concentrated. It seemed to me that scientific breakthroughs would next come in this area, which made it both challenging and promising. I learned a whole lot about this area in the course if doing my thesis titled “The Radio Shunting System in Railroad”, for which some experiments were conducted on the basis of artificial intelligence.

My solid education paid off in my ability to take on a variety of responsibilities in China’s burgeoning software industry. After I obtained my Master’s Degree in Engineering in 1994, I first took up a job with a telecommunication company, where I managed a trunk communication system that resembled the cellular wireless system. A year later, I joined a software company to develop CMIS program for China’s Post and Telecommunications Ministry. It was a large project, and I made crucial contribution to it by independently developing and finalizing one subsystem, which proved to be a significant success and won me profuse appreciation from users. After the completion of that project, I have been working for the Japan Brother Ltd. in the area of software development.

The relative smooth path of my career notwithstanding, I have not had a chance to lead a major project, although I have always finished my part of every project immaculately. In spite of all my achievements, I feel that I have not taken the full advantages of my intellectual capabilities. I now wish to pursue still more advanced studies and thereby obtain an advanced degree so that I can open more doors and shoulder greater responsibilities.

I believe I have acquired the necessary theoretical framework and sufficient practical experience for further studies. My ability to teach myself and conduct independent research allows me to attain competence quickly in areas that I may at first know very little about. I never work just to finish an assignment, but instead I always try conscientiously to improve my knowledge and expertise through the work I do. In this fashion, I have become seasoned in such fields as trunking system (telecommunications) and CMIS system (software). This quality should help me as I seek to further upgrade my education, particularly if I have ready access to the seasoned guidance of a strong faculty and the convenience of state-of-the-art research facilities.

The University of Idaho is well known for its excellence in the E. E field, complete with an accomplished faculty and modern research resources. These should set a good stage for me to exercise my keen mental power and diligence. If I am accepted, I am confident that I can make quick progress in the E. E field, especially in the areas of artificial intelligence, image processing, wireless communication, neural network and computer networking, which have many characteristics in common and share many important principles. Due to the broad applications of these technologies, I believe the progress we make in these areas will help shape the future of the mankind. I would like t be at the forefront of such progress.

As I am broadly grounded in EE and computer science, you may find me qualified or more qualified for advanced studies in areas other than those I have mentioned. If so, I would greatly appreciate it if you could let me know any suggestions that you may have.

I wish to assure you that I have the necessary English language skills to complete advanced studies in your Ph. D. program. I generally read or write English without any difficulty. I have, over the years, not only read academic or professional materials in English avidly but also memorized the whole English-Chinese dictionary. There may be room for improvement in my oral English and English listening comprehension. But I am sure my English proficiency is sufficient for me to undertake advanced studies and research. Besides, I believe I can improve my oral English by leaps and bounds once I start to live in an English-speaking environment. All that I need to do is to set my mind free.

I plan to return to China after the completion of my Ph. D. studies either to teach at one of the larger Chinese universities or to lead a high-tech corporation.

Yours sincerely,

xuexila

Dear _,

Creative activities have always drawn my attention, from a young age I would draw, colour, cut and create! I’m still very much like this, I find myself losing track of time and working into the small hours. I enjoy the challenges which design presents and communicating my ideas as solutions.Being involved in extreme sports when I was younger helped to feed my creative cravings, it gave me a focus and allowed me to express myself freely. I wanted to represent these hobbies, that’s when I decided to design t-shirts that would display a connection with my friends and our common interests.

Prior to applying to study illustration, I have worked in job roles where I have learnt valuable skills. The majority of my experience being within the retail industry. I have learnt the values of team work, meeting deadlines, being pro active and working to ones own iniative. Working for high fashion retailers has also allowed me to keep my creative edge. I have personally made displays, dressed windows and mannequins, remerchandised walls, even down to placing fixtures requires industry knowledge and creativeness. It was at this point I realised I would really enjoy working within a more creative industry.

In my free time I enjoy playing guitar, writing music, discovering new bands, attending gigs, reading, photography, watching films and playing chess. A big desire of mine is to travel, I believe it is an important part of life. I know the places I have visited so far have left an impression on me, I am always keen to discover and explore. Without visiting new places and meeting different people, I would not have as much awareness of the world, I view this as an essential part of design. I also consider design to be a hobby which I am passionate about and enjoy thoroughly. It seems natural for me to take this to the next level as I see design being more than just a hobby.

Studying at degree level will give me the opportunity to respond to briefs, rather than self-initiating my work. Though more importantly I will also be given the opportunity to work with other designers, be it my tutors or fellow students. Working in a creative atmosphere amongst others who are able to give critique and advice, will be the most valuable area to me. I would also like to use university as a stepping-stone to gain work, through exhibitions, opportunities within the university and through industry links.

Some of my favourite artists would include David Shrigley for his bazaar humour, Banksy for his satire and directness and Frank Sheppard Fairey for his ‘phenomenology’ experiment.

Illustration has recently become a bit of an obsession to me and I can’t remember a day when I wasn’t drawing or doodling an idea. There’s something satisfying about spending hours rendering an idea, only to realise something is slightly out of place and deciding to spend a night in perfecting it.

Yours sincerely,

——

ESL(English as a Second Language)课程,然后再让其接受中学教育。

Dear _,

In the summer of 20_, on a bright afternoon, I stepped into the high school gate as the first place in the city's high school entrance examination. In a blink of an eye, hundreds of days passed, and the days of exploring the Olympic Games seemed to have not gone far, and the curtain of studying abroad had opened again, beckoning me to interpret the splendor of life again.

Regarding the years before high school, my most vivid memory is that from elementary school to junior high school, at the end of each semester, I had to go home with a certificate of “three good students” and a stack of books as prizes. In the meantime, although I have experienced several changes of school transfers and class teachers, this “honorable tradition” of mine has never been interrupted. After entering the high school and being selected for the science experiment class, I cherish my time even more. Diligence, study, and progress have become my motto, and my academic performance has always been among the best in the school.

In studying, my greatest hobby and pleasure is thinking. I rarely accept a certain knowledge without thinking, but always try to explore the connection and entanglement between knowledge points and knowledge points, the relationship and mutual proof between existing knowledge and new knowledge. I remember the first time I learned the content of electric field. I groped for several days between electric charges, electric field lines, spherical shells and plates. I finally understood the inner connection between electric potential, field strength and capacitance. It felt like a night in the middle of winter. The superheated bath is generally invigorating. This kind of study habit not only made my learning easier, but also cleared the obstacles for my road of competition. Since elementary school, I have actively participated in competitions. In junior high school, I won two provincial first prizes in mathematics and physics. The rich content of high school competitions, the depth and breadth of the level, made me feel like seeing each other late. God rewards hard work. In 2011, I won the second prize in the provincial division of the Physics Olympiad; in 20_, I continued to work hard and won the first prize in the provincial division of the Physics Olympiad and the second prize in the provincial division of the chemistry Olympiad.

Thinking is not only a booster for learning, but also a spice to enrich life and an incubator for wisdom. Thanks to the habit of reading books since I was a child, literary masterpieces, celebrity biographies, encyclopedic knowledge, news essays... are often captured by the eyes that I like to explore, stuffed into the grinding wheel of thinking, and from time to time will produce short and long Learned.

Although it is often said that thought makes people silent, I am a conclusive counterexample. Whenever I have free time, talking and laughing with my classmates is one of my hobbies. Not only did I relax my nerves while laughing, but also enhanced the friendship between my classmates. A group of people often gather around, and occasionally witty words burst out, and everyone laughs forward and backward. Because of this, I have a good relationship among classmates and many friends. No, less than a month after I entered the high school gate, I became acquainted with my new classmates every day.

I remember a philosopher said: “Ideal refers to the beacon. Without ideals, there is no firm direction, and without direction, there is no life.” Thirteen years ago, our family moved from our home in Anhui thousands of miles away to the reform and opening Zhangjiagang City, the frontier zone, may be the call of ideals. Today, I have grown from a ignorant child to a high school student, and dreaming of Tsinghua has always been my persistent pursuit. I remember when I was five or six years old, every time an adult asked me what university I wanted to go to in the future, the answer was almost always “Sunshine University”. Sunshine University, like a green dream across a vast expanse of clear water, once haunted every student's heart on the vast land. However, as the age grows and the state of learning changes, many people gradually hide this unattainable dream back in their hearts. And my dream, instead of being wiped out by the years, has increased day by day, speeding up jointing.

Yours sincerely,

xuexila
