随着申请美国留学的人数越来越多。也进入了申请美国留学的信息泛滥时代，不管是正确的还是骗人的信息扑面而来。不少信息就成为了美国留学的谣言。
谣言一：大学青睐于多才多艺的孩子。不好意思，不是这样的;他们喜欢的是多才多艺的班级。各大学将他们的入学班级像马赛克一样拼凑起来：每个学术院系配置几位的学习干将、几位运动员、一些音乐家、舞蹈家和表演明星，再配合一点种族和经济背景的多样化，以及未来的社团领袖，等等。大学想要的学生是那些专注于和精通于某门学科的人。他们常用到的词是。
谣言二：这是个卖方市场。不管你信不信，你所处的位置要比你想象中好。这并不意味着你可在耶鲁和普林斯顿之间随意挑选，除非你是异常的申请者;或者在南加州大学与加州大学洛杉矶分校之间挑选，除非你是一个非常的学生。但是全国只有65所大学，拒绝的申请函多于他们接受的。在余下来的这些学校中，仍然有很多是和深受好评的。因而在决定“可能的”选择时，这个因素是你需要考虑的。
谣言三：申请材料中的随笔(Essay)并不重要。随笔其实是一个非常好的机会，让你讲述关于自己的一些积极和令人印象深刻的东西。你的学分差不多已经确定了。SAT或者ACT成绩也已达到一定的水平。大部分孩子还是浪费了随笔这个机会。
我们知道很多孩子直到后一分钟才开始写他们的随笔。这只是问题的一部分。即使那些早早开始准备的孩子——不管是自觉的还是被父母逼着去写，他们基本上都没有足够的时间重写文书。写遍是比较容易的;但是写第二遍。很多孩子认为随笔的目的是为了写一些让录取办公室“留下印象”的东西。在某些方面，的确是这样。但是要让录取办公室留下印象，文书上必须有一些关于申请人的积极方面的描写;这能让委员会通过简单的几张纸就对申请人粗略地有所了解。随笔是一个介绍申请人不同方面的机会，一个接受这个孩子的理由。这是一个不容错失的机会。
谣言四：面试并不要紧。大部分大型的院校——以及所有的长春藤联盟学校，已经取消了校内面试(但是很多学校还是会进行校友面试)。如果某所大学向你提供面试的机会，这并不是“可去可不去”，而是一定要去。
如果不能抓住这个机会，面试院校会获得这样一个信息——你不是真的对这个学校感兴趣。由于有很多孩子具备与你相同的证书，这些学校肯定会喜欢那些进行过面试的孩子。同样，如果某些学生曾花时间思考为什么某所学校引起他们的兴趣并且为什么他们适合这所学校，他们肯定受到学校的喜爱。这意味着：为面试做些功课以及练习。你不能谈吐机械，但是也不能让别人听起来你好像没有认真思考过为何要加入这所学校。
谣言五：申请财务援助总会产生负面影响。在某些大学，要求提供财务援助对于录取决定没有任何影响。这些就是所谓的“需求回避”(need-blind)学校。但是在其他学校，财务援助的需求可能会对录取决定产生影响——有的是积极的有的是消极的。
被申请的学校将告诉你他们采取的是何种程序。你还应该知道的是，学校提供的援助——助学金和助学——要多于你可能想象的范围，甚至对中层阶级家庭来说也是。但是你必须提出申请。
谣言六：提早申请(Earlydecision)只适用于那些名门之后或者非常确定自己想要加入那所学校的人。提早申请——即你提前向一所学校进行申请并在你的申请被批准后依规定必须加入这所学校，能使你被录取的机会提高一倍甚至两倍。这也是很多预备学校和私人大学顾问采用的战略。
进行提早申请的孩子通常不是非常确定自己适合某个学校。但是他们知道被录取的机会较高，别人也建议他们进行申请并决定申请哪所学校。如果入学后发现被申请的大学并不适合你，你一般都可以申请转校。
一个重要的告诫：尽管对于提早申请的孩子来说，录取的'机会高出很多，但是对于申请难度相对较高的学校，这并不是合适的策略选择。
谣言七：你有一个能给人留下深刻印象的课外活动和社区服务清单。孩子们(常常受父母怂恿)认为他们需要一个包括课外活动、体育和暑期志愿服务的冗长清单，这样才能被的大学录取。这不是真的。大学在拼凑一个多才多艺的班级时想看到的是热情和孜孜不倦。一两个长期参与并获得领导地位的活动要远比一大批走马观花式的活动让人印象深刻。
在社区服务方面，大部分高中要求进行某种形式的社区服务。很多中上阶层的家庭认为如果家里的中学生在当地医院充当志愿者或者参与一些国外的夏令营，会加深录取办公室的印象。不好意思，这两方面一般都不会对录取办公室的决定产生影响——除非你多年从事该活动或者所有成绩“卓尔不群”，从而能显示出你的热情和领导力。
谣言八：录取官不会检查我的Facebook主页。不要抱侥幸心理!一些学校的录取官专门对申请人的Facebook页面进行检查。面对大量拥有学历的申请人，各院校一般会寻找拒绝申请的理由。Facebook页面具有“不合适的”照片就是一个简单的拒绝理由。一个简单的规则是：如果你的祖母会对你的Facebook页面内容感到难堪，请进行清理。
谣言九：提前获得VIP的推荐。在大学录取领域，有这样一个广为接受的说法：文件越厚，孩子被录取的机会就越大。不要让VIP——国会成员、企业首席执行官、大学信托委员会成员——给你的孩子写推荐信。除非你的孩子真的确确实实曾为他们工作。录取院校希望得到老师的推荐——那些可以提供有关这个学生的兴趣、优点和成长方面意见的老师。

一、选择推荐人

推荐人对被推荐人的基本评价。侧重于被推荐人的专业基础、个性、特点、工作态度和在学术上的前途估计。若是推荐研究生，推荐人还需进一步说明其深造学习的基础和当前所具备的研究能力。显然，恰如其分地评价被推荐人的基础、能力和前途，比言过其实的赞誉更令人情服，更具有实际意义。
推荐人可以着重介绍被推荐人曾经获得的奖励，发表过的论文，参加过的重要学术会议，以及曾在学生组织或学术团体中的任职等来支持自己的评价。
推荐人还必须清楚地表明被推荐人留学的身份是研究生还是访问学者，专业领域和研究方向是什么。
如果大学提供了现成的推荐表格，则必须按这类表格认真逐项填写。推荐表格中一般有学生综合评估的一项，即要求推荐人说明该生在所教的学生中应列为前5%，10%，或25%等。这种评估是指教授的个人评价，可以稍高一点。另外，推荐表格上常有许多难以填写的项目，遇到这种情形可填“I don't know”，亦不致对该生的评价有何严重影响。

people in China. This network is attractive, if it can be really carried out in our nation, I think, it can help the old people who are like me to really enjoy our rest time. Though this is an ideal model, it can give the developmental direction to the rural social welfare. Certainly, many medias have cited and published this paper is not surprising for it is real a good paper as few graduate student can write.
Finally, his leadership skill is charming.
