相传从前有一个大恶魔，他非常坏，经常把别人的庄稼弄坏，可是他太强大了，村民们无可奈何，逃的逃，走的走。这个大恶魔有十二位妻子，都很聪明、漂亮，其中第十二位妻子最为聪明。恶魔的行为使她们很气愤，于是，第十二位妻子便想了一个办法。她有一天吧恶魔哄得好开心，她就乘机问：“大王，村民们怎么三番五次都没办法把你杀死呢？”他一高兴就说漏了嘴：“谁拔掉我一根头发，然后将我勒死就可以了。你可不许告诉别人啊！”夜深了，第十二位妻子就按这个方法把恶魔杀了。可是，那头一落地，就烧起了熊熊大火。把头一拿起来，火就灭了。没办法，她们只好轮流抱住那个血淋淋的头。村民们看见他们全身血淋淋的，就用水泼她们。于是，便有了“泼水节”。

泼水节是傣族人民最隆重的节日。泼水节在公历的四月中旬，历时三天，第一天划龙舟、文艺表演；第二天泼水；第三天，人们在一块进行行丢包游戏和物资交流。
泼水节来临时，人们忙着杀猪、杀鸡、酿酒，还做许多的年糕和多种粑粑，供节日食用。
当泼水节开始时，傣族人用盆子、锅盛满水，一边说着祝福的话，一边用树叶、树枝向对方洒去，在大街小巷嬉戏追逐，只觉得，迎面的水、背后的水，尽情得泼来，一个个全身湿透，但人们兴高采烈，到处充满欢声笑语，激动时，人们还喊出“水、水、水”的欢呼声。
丢包时，在草坪上男女各站一排，先让傣族姑娘把包扔给小伙子，小伙子再扔给姑娘，以此传递感情。
1969年4月13日—15日，敬爱的周总理来到西双版纳的景洪，和边疆的人民共庆傣历泼水节，他兴致勃勃地换上傣族服装，手持银盆与各族人民互相泼水祝福，从此以后，西双版纳的景洪成为闻名中外的旅游胜地。

自很早很早以前，有一个凶恶的魔王，他身有魔法，落在水里漂不走，掉在水里烧不烂，刀砍不烂，枪刺不入，弓箭射不着。他自持法力过人，傲慢自大，整天横行霸道，为非作歹。那时，天有十六层，他就成了其中一层的霸主。他对人民欺压掳掠，无恶不作。他已经有了六个美丽的妻子，但哪一家若有美丽的女儿，他都要霸占为妻。有一次，他看到人间的一个公主名叫婻粽布的，长得比他的六个妻子都漂亮，于是，他又把她抢来，作了他的第七个妻子。
有一年六月，正是人间过年的那一天，魔王为婻粽布贺年，招来了魔臣魔将，在宫中饮酒作乐。酒过三巡，宾主都已经醉醺醺的了。婻粽布乘机对魔王称颂道：“我尊贵的大王，您法力无边，德行高尚，凭着您的威望，您完全可以征服天堂、地狱、人间，您应该做三界的主人。”魔王听了洋洋得意，沉思了一会儿，转过脸对爱妻说：“我的`确能征服三界，我的弱点是谁也不知道的。”婻粽布接着又问道：“大王有如此魔力，怎么会有弱点?”魔王小声回答：“我就怕别人拔我的头发勒我的脖子，这会使我身首分家，你可得经常看着点儿。”婻粽布假装惊讶的追问：“能够征服三界的大王，怎么会怕头发丝?”魔王又小声的说：“头发丝虽然小，但我的头发丝却会勒断我的脖子，我就活不成了。”
婻粽布听了以后，暗暗打定主意。于是，她继续为魔王斟酒，直到酒席散尽，她又扶魔王上床睡熟。这时，她小心地拔下魔王的一根头发，未等魔王惊醒就勒到了魔王的脖子上。魔王的头立刻就掉到地上，头上滴下的血，每一滴都变成了一团火，熊熊燃烧，而且迅速往人间蔓延。这时，婻粽布赶忙把魔王的头抱起来，大地上的火焰也就熄灭了，可头一放下，火又烧起来了。于是，六个王妻也都赶来了，她们轮流抱着魔王的头，这样火才不再烧起来。
后来，婻粽布回答人间，但她仍就浑身血迹，人们为了洗掉她身上的血迹，纷纷向她泼水。血迹终于洗净了，婻粽布幸福地生活在了人间。

泼水节源于印度，曾经是婆罗门教的一种宗教仪式。其后，为佛教所吸收，经缅甸传入云南傣族地区。泼水节为傣历新年的庆祝活动，一般在阳历4月13日至4月15日之间。届时人们先至佛寺浴佛，然后互相泼水，用飞溅的水花表示真诚的祝福。到处欢声笑语，充满了节日气氛。
