庄子的行动传到小人那儿,他便歪曲庄子的来意,从中挑拨说,庄子此番进京拜访,来者不善,意在谋取相位。惠施一听,心里十分恐慌,害怕丧失官位,于是下令搜捕庄子。为了抓到他,整整在国都搜查了三天三夜。

惠施的举动被庄子知道了,庄子索性主动登门求见。惠施见庄子竟敢自投罗网,吃惊不已。庄子也不向惠施多解释,只是坐下来讲了一个故事:

在南方,传说中有一种神鸟,与凤凰同类,名叫鹓鹐(yuanchu),它从南海出发飞往北海,在途中,若不见高高的梧桐树,绝不栖息;不是翠竹与珍稀的果实,绝不食用;不遇甘甜的泉水,绝不畅饮。

神鸟一路飞翔,它在天空看见地面上有只猫头鹰,正在啄食一只腐烂的死鼠。猫头鹰饥不择食,它在看见头顶上的神鸟后,以为是来抢食死鼠的,于是涨红了脸,羽毛竖起,怒目而视,作出决一死战的架势。它见神鸟仍在头顶飞翔,便对着它声嘶力竭地发出吓人的喝叫!

庄子把猫头鹰遇到神鸟的故事讲完后,坦然地走到惠施面前,笑着问他:“今天,您获取了魏国相位,看见我来了,是不是也要对我恫吓一番呢?”说完,庄子放声大笑,拂袖而去。

有远大志向的.人追求高洁却不被世俗小人理解。贪求利禄的小人用阴暗的心理来猜测人格高尚者的行为。真可谓以小人之心,度君子之腹。寓言讽刺鞭挞了权迷心窍的人。
