庄子的好朋友惠施被封为魏国的宰相后，庄子很为自己的朋友高兴，启程去访见惠施。
庄子的行动传到小人那儿，他便歪曲庄子的来意，从中挑拨说，庄子此番进京拜访，来者不善，意在谋取相位。惠施一听，心里十分恐慌，害怕丧失官位，于是下令搜捕庄子。为了抓到他，整整在国都搜查了三天三夜。

神鸟一路飞翔，它在天空看见地面上有只猫头鹰，正在啄食一只腐烂的死鼠。猫头鹰饥不择食，它在看见头顶上的神鸟后，以为是来抢食死鼠的，于是涨红了脸，羽毛竖起，怒目而视，作出决一死战的架势。它见神鸟仍在头顶飞翔，便对着它声嘶力竭地发出吓人的喝叫!
