第一类:代词 eg. this, it, they

For example:

Where would the sentence best fit?

This is a question that has puzzled scientists for ages.

Extinct but already fully marine cetaceans are known from the fossil record. How was the gap between a walking mammal and a swimming whale bridged? Missing until recently were fossils clearly intermediate, or transitional, between land mammals and cetaceans. Very exciting discoveries have finally allowed scientists to reconstruct the most likely origins of cetaceans. In 1979, a team looking for fossils in northern Pakistan found what proved to be the oldest fossil whale.

再根据句子后半部分a question that has puzzled scientists for ages, 了解到this的指代内容原来是个question, 并且是科学难题呀。

第二类:名词 eg. 在句子中的形式一般为:this/these/such/another…+名词

For example:

Where would the sentence best fit?

This economic reliance on livestock in certain regions makes large tracts of land susceptible to overgrazing.

the raising of livestock is a major economic activity in semiarid lands, where grasses are generally the dominant type of natural vegetation. The consequences of an excessive number of livestock grazing in an area are the reduction of the vegetation cover and the trampling and pulverization of the soil. This is usually followed by the drying of the soil and accelerated erosion.

这里的线索词就是economic reliance,回去原文找根源,第二个插入口前面一句the raise of livestock is a major economic activity…,发现economic reliance就是major economic activity就是同义转换。

第三类:逻辑词 eg.however/but /thus/accordingly/consequently/hence ...

这类表转折和 thus/accordingly …

For example:

Where would the sentence best fit?

Consequently, tunas do not need to suck in water.

Because they are always swimming, tunas simply have to open their mouths and water is forced in and over their gills.Accordingly, they have lost most of the muscles that other fishes use to suck in water and push it past the gills. In fact, tunas must swim to breathe. They must also keep swimming to keep from sinking, since most have largely or completely lost the swim bladder, the gas-filled sac that helps most other fish remain buoyant.

Look at the four squares [■] that indicate where the following sentence could be added to the passage.

待插入的句子必然有很多成分,其中广泛存在的就是指代词,如:this, that, these, those, it, he, she, him, her, the, another, other以及定冠词the。 例如:当我们表达“我有一个苹果的时候”,我们要这样说:I have an apple而不是I have the apple。 I have an apple. The apple is green. 而不是I have the apple. An apple is green.

We all know that many more people today are right-handed than left-handed. Can one trace this same pattern far back in prehistory? ■Much of the evidence about right-hand versus left-hand dominance comes from stencils and prints found in rock shelters in Australia and elsewhere, and in many Ice Age caves in France, Spain, and Tasmania. ■When a left hand has been stenciled, this implies that the artist was right-handed, and vice versa. ■Even though the paint was often sprayed on by mouth, one can assume that the dominant hand assisted inthe operation. One also has to make the assumption that hands were stenciled palm downward—a left hand stenciled palm upward might of course look as if it were a right hand. ■Of 158 stencils in the French cave of Gargas, 136 have been identified as left, and only 22 as right; right-handedness was therefore heavily predominant.

Look at the four squares [■] that indicate where the following sentence could be added to the passage.

The stencils of hands found in these shelters and caves allow us to draw conclusions about which hand was dominant.

常见的逻辑关系词有很多,如but, however, nevertheless, because, since, thus, so, in fact(可表示转折或者总结)等。

Many signals that animals make seem to impose on the signalers costs that are overly damaging. ■ A classic example is noisy begging by nestling songbirds when a parent returns to the nest with food. ■These loud cheeps and peeps might give the location of the nest away to a listening hawk or raccoon, resulting in the death of the defenseless nestlings.■ In fact, when tapes of begging tree swallows were played at an artificial swallow nest containing an egg, the egg in that “noisy” nest was taken or destroyed by predators before the egg in a nearby quiet nest in 29 of 37 trials.■

Look at the four squares [■] that indicate where the following sentence could be added to the passage.

The cheeping provides important information to the parent, but it could also attract the attention of others.

1:In the animal world the task of moving about is fulfilled in many ways. For some animals locomotion is accomplished by changes in body shape.

2:The heavy amounts of heat and pollution rising form cities both delay and stimulate the fall of precipitation, depriving some areas of rain while drenching others.

1、首句——统领全文、提纲挈领、引出下文,为后----铺垫、埋下伏笔;

6、情感句——抒发强烈内在情感,直抒胸臆;

1、记叙文中的议论往往起画龙点睛、揭示记叙目的和意义的作用;

2、议论文中的记叙往往起到例证的作用;

1、语言是否准确、简练、生动、形象;

2、具有怎样独特的语言风格(幽默、辛辣、平实、自然、简洁明快、含蓄深沉等);

GRE Verbal

GRE Verbal-Sentence Equivalence GRE

When you have selected your pair of answer choices, check to make sure that each one produces a sentence that is logically, grammatically and stylistically coherent, and that the two sentences mean the same thing.

(2 )A but B

(8)逻辑对立词:shift,change,be challenged by,oscillate等。

GRE填空重点信息标志:出现but, yet, however, nevertheless, although, (even) though, while, whereas, notwithstanding, despite, in spite of, in contrast (to), on the contrary, on the other hand, whatever, otherwise, ironically, paradoxically, curiously, surprisingly 等带有转折逆转含义的题目,则代入空格的正确选项必与中心线索构成语义对立的反义词关系。

In spite of the increasing _______ of their opinions, the group knew they had to arrive at a consensus so that the award could be presented.

A. impartiality

B. consistency

C. judiciousness

D. incisiveness

E. polarity

A impartiality, “不偏不倚, 公正, 公平”

B consistency “一致性, 连贯性”

C judiciousness “明智”

D incisiveness “深刻,激烈”

E polarity “极端”

那么,我们要先把后半句话的意思弄明白了,the group knew they had to arrive at a consensus so that the award could be presented 即“这个团体知道他们不得不达成一致意见以便作出决定”。

1) 题干篇幅为1~5句话;

2) 题干中会出现2个空格;

3) 每个空格有三个候选选项;

4) 每个空格要独立进行判断和选择;

1:Vain and prone to violence, Caravaggio could not handle success: the more his (i) ______ as an artist increased, the more (ii) ______ his life became.

BLANK (i) (A) temperance (B) notoriety (C) eminence

BLANK (ii) (D) tumultuous (E) providential (F) dispassionate

2. 确定blank1中应该填入一个名词,表示C作为一名艺术家在某一方面的成绩,blank2中应该填入一个形容词,表示C的生活的变化形式;

3. 发现句子中有冒号,可以推断句子前后两部分是一种解释说明的关系,即句子前后两部分意思一致,前半句说C对于成功的把握很差,而且倾向于暴力;则后半句也应该是同样的意思;

4. 在后半句中,as an artist increased应该对应的是―成功的意思,从blank1中选出―eminence,而his life became,对应的是其倾向于暴力的部分,从blank2中选出―tumultuous。

2:The brief survey, published under the title The Work of Nature: How the Diversity of Life Sustains Us, is surprisingly (i)____. Indeed it makes several longer treatments of the effects of lost biodiversity seem (ii)____.

Blank (i) A. distorted B. objective C. comprehensive

Blank (ii) D. redundant E. pithy F. premature

[Michelangelo (di Lodovico Buonarroti)]

To pay for the extra spending under this international poverty plan, each American would have to contribute less than the cost of buying a premium cup of coffee once a week. But financial aid is not(i)___, and even if the funding recommended here were to (ii)_____, the grandest objectives may well remain unfulfilled. Nonetheless, carefully targeted aid can reward responsible governments, (iii)_____individual initiative, and alleviate suffering. Many will think that's worth a cup of coffee.

Blank(i) A.an impediment B.a panacea C.a malady

Blank(ii) D.be insufficient E.recede F.materialize

Blank(iii) G. bviate H.temper I.encourage

And后面是一个让步转折,让步转折的句子,意思的重点落在转折部分,即the grandest objectives may well remainunfulfilled.

F. materialize.

panacea n. a remedy for all ills or difficulties 万灵药

temper v. to dilute, qualify, or soften by theaddition or influence of something else : moderate

1:Far from viewing Jefferson as a skeptical but enlightened intellectual, historians of the 1960’s portrayed him as ______ thinker, eager to fill the young with his political orthodoxy while censoring ideas he did not like.

A. an adventurous

B. a doctrinaire

C. an eclectic

D. a judicious

E. a cynical

【解析】简化句子,句子的主干是historians of the 1960’s portrayed him as ______ thinker,然后找出句子的逻辑关系。

2:Before 1500 North America was inhabited by more than 300 cultural groups, each with different customs, social structures, world views, and languages; such diversity _______the existence of a single Native American culture.

(A) complements

(B) implies

(C) reiterates

(D) argues against

(E) explains away

而空格后面却出现了a single Native American culture,前后是不一致的,所以此时的冒号作用就没有了,所以D只有能联系前面的such diversity 和后面的a single

因果:because, in that, for, therefore, thus, accordingly, consequently, given, hence, so…that, so...as to, if...then, when...then, as long as...

转折:albeit, although, though, but, despite, even though, however, in spite of, nevertheless, nonetheless, notwithstanding, while, whatever, regardless, even if, even though, yet, and yet...

递进:even, indeed...

对比:in contrast, on the contrary, far from, on the other hand, rather than, instead of, not…but, paradoxically, ironically, surprisingly, unexpectedly, curiously...

The eradication of pollution is not merely a matter of ___, though the majestic beauty of nature is indeed an important consideration.

A. economics B. legislation C. cleanliness D. aesthetics E. restoration

Comparatively few rock musicians are willing to laugh at themselves, although a hint of----can boost sales of video clips very nicely.

A. self-deprecation B. congeniality C. cynicism D. embarrassment E. self-doubt

Melodramas, which presented stark oppositions between innocence and criminality, virtue and corruption, good and evil, were popular precisely because they offered the audience a world ___of___.

A. bereft.. theatricality B. composed.. adversity C. full.. circumstantiality D. deprived.. polarity

E. devoid.. neutrality

The Muses are___deities: they avenge themselves without mercy on those who weary of their charms.

A. rueful B. ingenuous C. solicitous D. vindictive E. dispassionate

Unenlightened authoritarian managers rarely recognize a crucial reason for the low levels of serious conflict among members of democratically run work groups: a modicum of tolerance for dissent often prevents___。

A. demur B. schism C. cooperation D. compliance E. shortsightedness

The valedictory address, as it has developed in American colleges and universities over the years, has become a very strict form, a literary ___ that permits very little ___.

A. text.. clarity B. work.. tradition C. genre.. deviation

D. oration.. grandiloquence E. achievement.. rigidity

a literary ___ that permits very little ___. 是前面的a very strict form的同位语,所以第一空格填form的同义或近义词,that permits very little___.

Many more eighteenth-century novels were written by women than by men, but this dominance has, until very

recently, been regarded merely as ___ fact, a bit of arcane knowledge noted only by bibliographers。

A. a controversial B. a statistical C. an analytical D. an explicit E. an unimpeachable

这道题同样,a bit of arcane knowledge noted only by bibliographers.

1. The Broadway musical business is apparently ---- innovation and experimentation: it ---- characters and story lines that have dominated the musical stage for years.

A. oblivious … avoidsB. eager for … seeks C. skilled in… employs

D.famous for … generates E.averse to … recycles

2. Some theories of why election results in democracies sometimes seem perverse rest on the idea that there is an intrinsic ---- in human behavior; in contrast, other explanations posits that people act logically, ---- their interests and behaving accordingly.

A. selfishness … assuming B. unpredictability … ignoring C. ratiocination … analyzing

D.impulsivity … thwarting E.irrationality … calculating

3. The book’s account of the governors’ term in office is too uniformly____ to be persuasive: it overlooks her many accomplishments and ---- her failures.

A. encomiastic …analyzes B. caustic … downplays C. harsh … exaggerates

D. naive … exposes E.rosy … enumerates

冒号表示解释同义重复,characters and story lines that have dominated the musical stage for years.

[解析]:分号前面的主干是theories rest on idea,第一空格是修饰idea的,根据第二主干大法从修饰theories的地方找,of why election results in democracies sometimes seem perverse决定了第一空一定填负评价词,排除C。

冒号后面的and表示同义重复,her many accomplishments与her failures.

1. What the two sociologists have in common is a claim that their respective predictions describe____ outcomes: each scholar believes the developments he anticipates are ----.

A. dire … preventable B. global … negligible C. predetermined …inevitable

D. possible … ineluctable E.momentous … foreseeable

2. An epistolary novel, composed of fictitious correspondence between its characters, may seem ---- to the contemporary reader who writes few letters and who may doubt that anyone could have such incessant recourse to the pen.

A. injudicious B. iniquitous C. unrealistic D. insensate E.superfluous

3. Researchers say that methanol can boost the growth of plants by___ a natural process known as photorespiration, during which a plant can____ much of the energy it needs to grow.

A. promoting….waste B. modifying… alter C. blocking… store

D. inhibiting…. lose E.accelerating…. over utilize

4. Although many genuine friendships are entered into only out of pure goodwill ______ with selfish considerations, many real______ accrue to those who enter into such relations.

A. fraught……benefits B. unmixed……advantages C. disguised……deficits

D. confused……consequences E.unalloyed……attractions

后面说到much of the energy it needs to grow,这是正评价,可是植物到底能否得到这个好东西由第二空决定。

those who enter into such relations可以看作genuine friendships的同义重复(友谊与参与友谊的人们,上下义表达),accrue显然是正评价,所以第二空格必须填selfish considerations的同义重复。

1. During the speeches preliminary to the ship’s launching, its designer’s expression was pensive and his stare distant; doubtless, he was ______ the ceremony and was anxious to get on with the launch.

A. rearranging B. inspecting C. unsure of D. preoccupied with E.impatient with

2. Although not all the women in the group identified themselves as feminists, their lives______ their shared belief that men and women were equal and that the accomplishments, not the gender, of an individual mattered.

A. challenged B. demonstrated C. conflated D. undermined E.contradicted

3. The research committee urged the professor to ______ his claim that he was on the verge of an important discovery, since he had made several ______ assertions in the past.

A. modify … irreproachable B. substantiate … implausible C. promote … ambitious

D. disseminate … capricious E. verify … valid

(get on with继续做。)

再精确推一下,he= its designer,与its designer’s expression看作上下义同义表达,所以空格应该由was pensive and his stare distain来决定,所以C比较合适。
