一种说法是，19徐志摩远渡重洋，从美国到英国研究文学。在伦敦剑桥大学，他以一个特别生的资格，随意选科听课，度过了一年多真正悠闲自在的日子。据他后来回忆，这是他一生中最幸福的日子。在风景秀丽的康河两岸，他仰卧在有星星黄花点缀的葱绿草坪上，或看书，或看天上的行云。有时到碧波荡漾的康河里划船。他完全陶醉在大自然的怀抱里，临到他要离开伦敦的前夕，在一个美丽的黄昏，他在康桥上漫步，流连忘返，写下了这首诗。
另一种说法是，此诗作于徐志摩第三次欧游的归国途中。时间是1928年11月6日，地点是中国海。7月底的一个夏天，他在英国哲学家罗素家中逗留一夜之后，事先谁也没有通知，一个人悄悄来到康桥找他的英国朋友。遗憾的是他的英国朋友一个也不在，只有他熟悉的康桥在默默等待他，一幕幕过去的生活图景，又重新在他的眼前展现……由于他当时比较尽快，又赶着要去会见另一个英国朋友，故未把这次感情活动记录下来。直到他乘船离开马赛的归国途中，面对汹涌的大海了辽阔的天空，才展纸执笔，记下了这次重返康桥的切身感受。 徐志摩曾三次来到康桥。
第一次是19到1922年，他从美国来到剑桥大学研究院进修。学习期间形成了资产阶级的人生观和文艺观。对于爱、美与自由的单纯信仰，产生了他为之倾心的社会理想。换言之，剑桥所体现的英国式文明，形成了他所向往追求的康桥理想。他把康桥当作他“生命的源泉”“精神的依恋之乡”。兴趣也转向文学，喜爱写诗。回国后写诗《康桥再会罢》。
第二次1925年4月重游，归国后写散文《我所知道的康桥》。
第三次是1928年8月，写下了《再别康桥》。 诗人三次离别康桥时的感情也迥然不同，第一次依恋，第三次再别时心情大不相同，因为回国后帝国主义的侵略和军阀统治下的旧中国，使他痛感康桥理想主义的破灭，以由“单纯的信仰，流入了怀疑的颓废”。所以在《再别康桥》中，已然找不到写《康桥再会罢》时的那种热切依恋。虽然也歌咏了康河的美，但更多流露出自己孤独寂寞的情绪，诗人以缠绵凄婉的笔调，微妙展露了因“康桥幻想”幻灭而无限哀伤的情怀。

后记：
一向有一种偏见，以为真正好的作品是绝对民族的，个人的，不可模仿更不可翻译
的。好象兰州的牛肉面，一旦到了深圳上海，总觉得不是那个味，怕是水土不伏吧。
然而，这一篇，我以为却是很好的，一样的淡淡的忧伤浅浅的色彩。
