Compared with the forty year old shabby dormitory I am living in now, the one I lived in for three years in high school was heaven: three students shared one brand new suite with air conditioners and a bathroom.

第一，要从课文中挑选一些句子来做复述练习(paraphrasing),也就是用不同的词语来表达同一个意思。这就是一种“重复加变化”(repetition+variety)的练习形式，它不但有助于提高表达能力和流利程度，而且还可以达到“举一反三”的效果。把学习的每一个步骤都同提高我们用英语进行表达的能力实实在在地结合起来，这才是达到了我们学习英语的真正目的所在。
第二，与此同时.对这些句子的语法进行结构分析。课本编者对课文中的许多长句、难句、复杂句没有做认真的处理。而对于学习英语的学生来说，这些都是前进的障碍和拦路虎。我们可以用大写字母来表示句子的主干部分，用小写字母来表示从属部分;用箭头表示修饰与被修饰的关系;用底线表示重点或难点。并且还要把句子的各个部分用“图示法”排列开来，使得整个句子的结构及各部分之间的关系看起来一目了然。
第三，课本中的词汇表里列了许多单词，有的是很简单的单词，也有一些是不常用的单词。我们要从每一篇课文中挑选出一两个常用词作为重点词，做造句练习(要参考提供例句的英语词典)。这种由“点”到“线”的方法，可以克服表面地、孤立地、片面地、机械地死记单词的偏向。如果能进一步扩展到“点一线一面”.把若干个句子串起来成为一个段落，那么就更有意义。这样一来.学习单词也可以直接帮助我们提高用英语进行连贯表达的能力。
第四，每一课的单词表后面都列有一些短语和词组。对于它们，也可以采取“点一线一面”的做法，先造句、后编段.为提高我们的连贯表达能力服务。学习英语的最终目标是能够用单词、词组和短语来造句、编段和撰文。这就好比用砖头、木料盖各种各样的房子一样。如果不会盖房子，就是有再多的砖头和木料，那也是没有用的。
