电子技术的不断发展，解决了上述出现的问题。人们发明了一种电子胶卷，这种电子胶卷通过照相的方式，将书中的文字缩小。特别方便携带，1500万字的图书本来重达几吨，但经过电子胶卷的压缩可以变成30公斤。在19世纪的普法战争中，法国一位密探人员就是运用电子胶卷将3000多文字的电报压缩，然后让信鸽带回巴黎，为战争的胜利做出了很大的贡献。电子胶卷的问世，为图书和文字的储藏奠定了坚实的基础。
