My interest in science in general and chemistry in particular was first fostered by my family, which has, for several generations, been made up of professionals. My father, a professor of mathematics, was my main source of inspiration during the three years when I studied with the Beijing Mathematics Olympic School. Such a family environment has bestowed on me a gift for natural science that I have never failed to take advantage of. It has been my dream to become an outstanding expert in the field of chemistry.
Since I entered into the university over three years ago, I have studied diligently and conscientiously. With that, I have acquired a solid background in chemistry, mathematics and physics. With an overall GPA of 92. 29/100, I have, for three years running, kept myself as the very top student among the 114 undergraduates of my grade. I have not confined myself to my coursework, however. I have frequented the library and probably read more chemistry literature than most of other students. Due to the comprehensiveness of China’s “reform and open” policies， economics plays an increasingly important role in the development of its global position. Though more and more companies built， management of companies cannot catch up with the development of the companies. Management is a burgeoning field in China， so I hope I can acquire more modern knowledge on management in England. The roots of my strong interest in business can be traced back to my childhood. My father was among the first of China’s new breed of modern entrepreneurs. As a young girl， it was inspirational hearing about his business ventures， and meeting the varied and interesting circle of entrepreneurs. My mother was also involved in business as an accountant， helping him with simple calculations. And so it was early in my life that I hoped I， also， would someday be able to enter the realm of business.
With the time of growing up， I preferred reading books to satisfy my curiosity. I never ceased to contemplate over the questions I encountered. I have always had a fascination with the archaeological world. Archaeology provides me with the opportunity to question how my ancestors lived, worked, survived and created what is now the world today. My interest in learning about humanity’s past arose from when I was a child, where I was captivated with artifacts in museums. It provided a forum which was to my imagination and introduced me to experimental archaeology.
As I have matured, my enthusiasm and excitement for archaeology has grown after visits to Chester and York, where I was able to appreciate not only the archaeological artifacts found in these places, but also the magnificence of the standing buildings that remain today. This lead to a particular interest and eagerness to learn more about the ways of everyday life for the people living in the ancient world, in particular the Roman Empire.
My A-level study of archaeology has demonstrated my commitment to learning techniques, methods and theories needed to engage in effective research, excavations, delicacy and preservation of artifacts. Reading books such as ‘Archaeology is Rubbish’ by Tony Robinson and ‘Excavation’ by Steve Roskams has continued my studies. These books have provided me with extra knowledge of how to deal with specialist sites, such as waterlogged and underwater excavations. Additionally, they have developed my understanding of techniques used by archaeologists to gain the most accurate results when reconstructing the past.
A-Level Religion and Philosophy has extended my knowledge of archaeological aspects such as Roman religion and ritual. Moreover, geology has developed my understanding of how geological features can impact the landscape, which is essential for desktop archaeology and investigating settlement. Geology has also increased my ability to date and provide a location as to where certain artifacts may have come from. I have experienced hands on archaeology at the ‘Dig’ centre in York.
