Some of the old worries about artificial intelligence were closely linked to the question of whether computers could think. The first massive electronic computers, capable of rapid calculation and little or no creative activity, were soon dubbed(取绰号)“electronic brains”.A reaction to this terminology quickly followed, computers were called“high speed idiots”,an effort to protect human vanity. But not everyone realized theimplications of the high-speed idiot tag.It has not been pointed out enough that even the human idiot is one of the most intelligent life forms on earth. If the early computers were even that intelligent,it was already a remarkable state of affairs.
One consequence of speculation about the possibility of computer thought was that we were forced to examine with new care the idea of thought in general. It soon became clear that we were not sure what we meant bysuch terms as thought and thinking. We tend to assume that human beings think, some more than others, though we often call people thoughtless or unthinking.Dreams cause a problem, partly because they usually happen outside our control. They are obviously some type of mental experience, but are they a type of thinking? And the question of nonhuman life forms adds further problems. Many of us would maintain that some of the higheranimals-dogs,cats,apes,and so on-are capable of at least basic thought, but what about fish and insects? If thinking is demonstrated by evident electrical activity in the brain, then many species are capable of thought.Once we have formulated clear ideas on what thought is in biological creatures,it will be easier to discuss the question of thought in artifacts(人工制品).And what is true of thought is also true of the many other mental processes. One of the immense benefits of a research is that we are being forced to scrutinize, with new rigor, the working of the human mind.
It is already clear that machines have superior mental abilities to many life forms. No fern or oak tree can play chess as well as even the simplest digital computer, nor can frogs weld car bodies as well as robots. It seems that, viewed in terms of intellect ,the computer should be set well above plants and most animals.Only the higher animals can compete with computers with regard to intellect and even then with diminishing success.
1.What did people think of the early computers?
2.According to the author, the early computers is__________________than human idiots.
3.As a result of speculating whether computer could think,we had to research more carefully to get_____________________.
4.Why do dreams cause the problem whether they are a type of thinking, according to the author?
5.What does the author want to illustrate by mentioning the fern and the oak tree?
答案:
1.[They were called“high speed idiots”/They can calculate rapidly but are idiots.]
2.[less intelligent]
3.[the idea of thought in general]
4.[Because they usually happen outside our control./Because they are usually beyond our control.
解析:原文提到Dreams cause a problem后即明确解释原因:partly because they usually happen outside our control,答案可以照搬原文,也可以用介词beyond进行同义改写。
5.[Machines have superior mental abilities to many life forms./Computers are more intelligent than plants and most animals.]

The “standard of living” of any country means the average person's share of the goods and services which the country produces. A country's standard of living, therefore, depends first and foremost on its capacity to produce wealth. “Wealth” in this sense is not money, for we do not live on money but on things that money can buy: “goods” such as food and clothing, and “services” such as transport and entertainment.
A country's capacity to produce wealth depends upon many factors, most of which have an effect on one another. Wealth depends to a great extent upon a country's natural resources, such as coal, gold, and other minerals, water supply and so on. Some regions of the world are well supplied with coal and minerals, and have a fertile soil and a favorable climate; other regions possess perhaps only one of these things, and some regions possess none of them. The U. S. A is one of the wealthiest regions of the world because she has vast natural resources within her borders, her soil is fertile, and her climate is varied. The Sahara Desert, on the other hand, is one of the least wealthy.
Next to natural resources comes the ability to turn them to use. China is perhaps as well off as the U. S. A. in natural resources, but suffered for many years from civil and external wars, and for this and other reasons was. unable to develop her resources. Sound and stable political conditions, and freedom from foreign invasion, enable a country to develop its natural resources peacefully and steadily, and to produce more wealth than another country equally well served by nature but less well ordered. Another important factor is the technical efficiency of a country's people. Old countries that have, through many centuries, trained up numerous skilled craftsmen and technicians are better placed to produce wealth than countries whose workers are largely unskilled. Wealth also produces wealth. As a country becomes wealthier, its people have a large margin for saving, and can put their savings into factories and machines which will help workers to turn out more goods in their working day.
1. A country's wealth depends upon______.
A. its standard of living
B. its money
C. its ability to provide goods and services
D. its ability to provide transport and entertainment
2. The word “foremost” means______.
A. most importantly B. firstly
C. largely D. for the most part
3. The main idea of the second paragraph is that______.
A. a country's wealth depends on many factors
B. the U. S. A. is one of the wealthiest countries in the world
C. the Sahara Desert is a very poor region
D. natural resources are an important factor in the wealth or poverty of a country
4. The third paragraph mentions some of the advantages which one country may have over another in making use of its resources. How many such advantages are mentioned in this paragraph?
A. 2 B. 3
C. 4 D. 5
5. The second sentence.in Paragraph 3 is______.
A. the main idea of the paragraph
B. an example supporting the main idea of the paragraph
C. the conclusion of the paragraph
D. not related to the paragraph
答案:C A A B B

I've heard from and talked to many people who described how Mother Nature simplified their lives for them. They'd lost their home and many or all of their possessions through tires, floods, earthquakes, or some other disaster. Losing everything you own under such circumstances can be distressing, but the people I've heard from all saw their loss. ultimately, as a blessing.
“The fire saved us the agony of deciding what to keep and what to get rid of,” one woman wrote. And once all those things were no longer there, she and her husband saw how they had weighed them down and complicated their lives.
“There was to much stuff we never used and that was just taking up space- We vowed when we started over we'd replace only what we needed, and this time we'd do it right. We've kept our promise: we don't have much now, but what we have is exactly what we want.”
Though we've never had a catastrophic loss such as that, Gibbs and I did have a close call shortly before we decided to simplify. AI that time we lived in a fire zone. One night a firestorm raged through and destroyed over six hundred homes in our community. That tragedy gave us the opportunity to look objectively atthe goods we'd accumulated.
We saw that there was so much we could get rid of and not only never miss, but be better off without. Having almost lost it all. we found it much casier to let go of the things we knew we'd never use again.
Obviously, there's a tremendous difference between getting rid of possessions and losing them through a natural disaster without having a say in the matter. And this is not to minimize the tragedy and pain such aloss can generate.
But you might think about how you would approach the acquisition process if you had to do all over again. Look around your home and make a list or what you would replace.
Make another fist of things you wouldn't acquire again no matter what, and in fact would be happy to be rid of.
When you're ready to start unloading some of your stuff, that list will be a good place to start.
l.Many people whose possessions were destroyed in natural disasters eventually considered their loss________________.
2.After all their possessions were last in the fire, the woman and her husband felt that their lives were____________________.
3.What do we know about the author's house from the sentence “Gibbs and I did have a close call...” (Lines 1-2, Para. 4.)?
4.According to the author, getting rid of possessions and losing them through a natural disaster are vastly____________________.
5.What does the author suggest people do with unnecessary things?
答案:
1.[a blessing]
2.[simplified]
[定位]根据her husband和their lives查找到第2段末句。
3.[It narrowly escaped the firestorm.]
Gibbs and I did have a close call...
It narrowly escaped the firestorm。
4.[different]
5.[Be/Get rid of them.]
[定位]根据do with unnecessary things查找到倒数第2段。
Be/Get rid of them.

I live in the land of Disney, Hollywood and year-round sun. You may think people in such a glamorous, fun-filled place are happier than others. If so, you have some mistaken ideas about the nature of happiness.
Many intelligent people still equate happiness with fun. The truth is that fun and happiness have little or nothing in common. Fun is what we experience during an act. Happiness is what we experience after an act. It is a deeper, more abiding emotion.
Going to an amusement park or ball game, watching a movie or television, are fun activities that help us relax, temporarily forget our problems and maybe even laugh. But they do not bring happiness, because their positive effects end when the fun ends.
I have often thought that if Hollywood stars have a role to play, it is to teach us that happiness has nothing to do with fun. These rich, beautiful individuals have constant access to glamorous parties, fancy cars, expensive homes, everything that spells “happiness”。 But in memoir after memoir, celebrities reveal the unhappiness hidden beneath all their fun: depression, alcoholism, drug addiction, broken marriages, troubled children and profound loneliness.
Ask a bachelor why he resists marriage even though he finds dating to be less and less satisfying. If he‘s honest, he will tell you that he is afraid of making a commitment. For commitment is in fact quite painful. The single life is filled with fun, adventure and excitement. Marriage has such moments, but they are not its most distinguishing features.
Similarly, couples that choose not to have children are deciding in favor of painless fun over painful happiness. They can dine out ever they want and sleep as late as they want. Couples with infant children are lucky to get a whole night‘s sleep or a three-day vacation. I don’t know any parent who would choose the word fun to describe raising children.
Understanding and accepting that true happiness has nothing to do with fun is one of the most liberating realizations we can ever come to. It liberates time: now we can devote more hours to activities that can genuinely increase our happiness. It liberates money: buying that new car or those fancy clothes that will do nothing to increase our happiness now seems pointless. And it liberates us from envy: we now understand that all those rich and glamorous people we were so sure are happy because they are always having so much fun actually may not be happy at all.
1.Which of the following is true?
A.Fun creates long-lasting satisfaction.
B.Fun provides enjoyment while pain leads to happiness.
C.Happiness is enduring whereas fun is short-lived.
D.Fun that is long-standing may lead to happiness.
2.To the author, Hollywood stars all have an important role to play that is to __.
A.rite memoir after memoir about their happiness.
B.tell the public that happiness has nothing to do with fun.
C.teach people how to enjoy their lives.
D.bring happiness to the public instead of going to glamorous parties.
3.In the author‘s opinion, marriage___.
A.affords greater fun.
B.leads to raising children.
C.indicates commitment.
D.ends in pain.
4.Couples having infant children___.
A.are lucky since they can have a whole night‘s sleep.
B.find fun in tucking them into bed at night.
C.find more time to play and joke with them.
D.derive happiness from their endeavor.
5.If one get the meaning of the true sense of happiness, he will__.
A.stop playing games and joking with others.
B.make the best use of his time increasing happiness.
C.give a free hand to money.
D.keep himself with his family.
Now custom has not been commonly regarded as a subject of any great importance. The inner workings of our own brains we feel to be uniquely worthy of investigation, but custom,we have a way of thinking,is behavior at its most commonplace. As a matter of fact,it is the other way around. Traditional custom, taken the world over,is a mass of detailed behavior more astonishing than what any one person can ever evolve in individual actions.Yet that is a rather trivial aspect of the matter. The fact of firsi-rate importance is the predominant role that custom plays in experience and in belief and the very great varieties it may manifest.
No man ever looks at the world with pristine(未受外界影响的)eyes. He sees it edited by a definite set of customs and institutions and ways of thinking.Even in his philosophical probings he cannot go behind these stereotypes; his very concepts of the true and the false will still have reference to his particulartraditional customs.John Dewey has said in all seriousness that the part played by custom in shaping the behavior of the individual as over against any way in which he can affect traditional custom, is as the proportion of che total vocabulary of his mother tongue over against those words of his own baby talk that are taken up into the language of his family. When one seriously studies social orders that have had the opportunity to develop independently, the figure (比喻)becomes no more than an exact and matter-of-fact observation. The life history of the individual is first and foremost an adjustment to the patterns and standards traditionally handed down in his community. From the moment of his birth the customs into which he is born shape his experience and behavior.By the time he can talk,he is the little creature of his culture, and by the time he is grown and able to take part in its activities, its habits are his habits, its beliefs his beliefs, its impossibilities his impossibilities.
1.What is the author's attiude towards custom as behavior at its most commonplace?
2.The great varieties of custom are taken by the author as the_________aspect of the issue.
3.According to John Dewey, we can impose______________influence on our cultural tradition.
4.The author tends to regard John Dewey's idea as___________________.
5.An individual's experience and behavior are influenced by the customs since he_____________.
答案:
1.[Negative./Disapproving.]
[定位]根据a its most commonplace查找到首段第2句。
Negative./Disapproving.
2.[most/first-rate important]
3.[very little]
4.[an exact and matter-of-fact observation]
5.[is born]
空白处缺少谓语,而根据原文中的from the moment of his birth可知,此题since he后应填is born。

Work is a very important part of life in the United States. When the early Protestant immigrants came to this country, they brought the idea that work was the way to God and heaven. This attitude, the Protestant work ethic, still influences America today. Work is not only important for economic benefits, the salary, but also for social and psychological needs, the feeling of doing something for the good of the society. Americans spend most of their lives working, being productive. For most Americans, their work defines them; they are what they do. What happens, then when a person can no longer work?
Most Americans stop working at age sixty-five or seventy and retire. Because work is such an important part of life in this culture, retirement can be very difficult. Retirees often feel that they are useless and unproductive. Of course, some people are happy to retire; but leaving one’s job, whatever it is a difficult change, even for those who look forward to retiring. Many retirees do not know how to use their time or they feel lost without jobs.
Retirement can also bring financial problems. Many people rely on Social Security checks every month. During their working years, employees contribute a certain percentage of their salaries to the government. When people retire, they receive this money as income. These checks do not provide enough money to live on, however, because prices are increasing very rapidly. Senior citizens, those over sixty-five, have to have savings in the bank or other retirement plans to make ends meet. The rate of inflation is forcing prices higher each year; Social Security checks alone cannot cover Medicare (health care) and welfare (general assistance) but many senior citizens have to change their lifestyles after retirement. They have to spend carefully to be sure that they can afford to but food, fuel, and other necessities.
Of course, many senior citizens are happy with retirement. They have time to spend with their families or to enjoy their hobbies. Some continue to work part time; others do volunteer work. Some, like those in the Retired Business Executives Association, even help young people to get started in new business. Many retired citizens also belong to “Golden Age” groups. These organizations plan trips and social events. There are many opportunities for retirees.
Americans society is only beginning to be concerned about the special physical and emotional needs of its senior citizens. The government is taking steps to ease the problem of limited income. They are building new housing, offering discounts in stores and museums and on buses, and providing other services, such as free courses, food service, and help with housework. Retired citizens are a rapidly growing percentage of the population. This part of the population is very important and we must respond to their needs. After all, every citizen will be a senior citizen some day.
1.The early immigrants considered work ___.
A.too hard
B.important
C.pleasant
D.dull
2.Why do Americans like working? Because working ___.
A.doesn’t only mean money but it is also psychological
B.can make life more comfortable
C.can prove people to be independent
D.gives people funny
3.We can safely put forward that retirees who ___.
A.have no financial problems still want to earn more money
B.have financial problems still feel lost
C.have no financial problems still feel lost
D.have no financial problems feels it’s hard to make ends meet
4.According to the passage the government ___.
A.hadn’t paid attention to the retirees’ problems
B.has already solved a lot of retirees’ problems
C.has just begun to pay attention to the retirees’ problems
D.won’t pay attention to the retirees’ problems
5.Which of the following is not steps taken for the benefit of senior citizens by the government?
A.New housing has been built.
B.The old are offered discounts in stores.
C.Senior citizens are provided free courses, food service.

It is all very well to blame traffic jams, the cost of petrol and the quick pace of modern life, but mannerson the roads are becoming horrible.Everybody knows that the nicest men become monsters behind the wheel.Itis all very well, again,to have a tiger in the tank, but to have one in the driver's seat is another matter altogether. You might tolerate the odd road-hog(莽撞驾车者),the rude and inconsiderate driver, but nowadays the well-mannered motorist is the exception to the rule.Perhaps the situation calls for a “Be Kind to Other Drivers”campaign, otherwise it may get completely out of hand.
Road politeness is not only good manners, but good sense too.It takes the most cool-headed and good-tempered of drivers to resist the temptation to revenge when subjected to uncivilized behavior. On the other hand,a little politeness goes a long way towards relieving the tensions of motoring.A friendly nod or a wave of acknowledgement in response to an act of politeness when they see it.
However, misplaced politeness can also be dangerous.Typical examples are the driver who brakes violently toallow a car to emerge from a side street at some hazard to following traffic, when a few seconds later the road would be clear anyway;or the man who waves a child across a zebra crossing into the path of oncoming vehicles that may be unable to stop in time. The same goes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and whenever they care to.It always amazes me that the highways are not covered with the dead bodiesof these grannies.
A veteran driver, whose manners are faultless, told me it would help if motorists learnt to filter correctlyinto traffic streams one at a time without causing the total blockages that give rise to bad temper.Unfortunately, modern motorists can't even learn to drive, let alone master the subtler aspects of roadsmanship.Years age the experts warned us that the car-ownership explosion would demand a lot more give-and-take from all road users. It is high fime for all of us to take this message to heart.
1.According to the passage, people's behaviors on the roads are becoming_____________________.
2.What does the author suggest in order to get control of the situation?
3.Drivers who can manage to control their impulse to revenge when they experience impolite behavior are considered as_________________by the author.
4.Encouraging old ladies to cross the road at the wrong moment is referred as______________by the author.
5.Experts have long pointed out that all road users should be ready to yield to each other due to______________________.
答案:
1.[horrible]
2.[A“Be Kind to Other Drivers”campaign.]
解析:原文中的get out of hand意为“失控”,与题干中的get control of“控制”刚好相反。
3.[the most cool-headed and good-tempered.]
解析:题干中的control their impulse to相当于原文的resist the temptation to,experience impolite behavior也是原文subjected to uncivilized behavior的同义替换。
4.[misplaced politeness]
[定位]根据题干中的encouraging old ladies to cross the road定位到第3段。
原文该段倒数第二句中的The same goes for指的就是这种行为。
5.[the car-ownership explosion]
Years ago the experts warned对应题干中的Experts have long pointed out,而be ready to yield toeach other是原文中demand a lot more give-and-take的同义替换,故原文该句that从句中的主语the car-ownership explosion部分即为答案。
