1。The energy crisis in America discussed here mainly refers to ashortage of fossil fuels。 There's an energy crisis in America, and it has nothing to do with fossil fuels。原文中用的是“has nothing to do with fossil fuels(与化石燃料无关)”显然和题干中“mainly refers to ashortage of fossil fuels(主要指化石燃料的匮乏)”意思不符,所以显然是N。
7。The real-estate broker the author knows is talented in home redecoration。 A real-estate broker Iknow keeps herself amused on the job by mentally redecorating the houses she shows to clients。

Skimming――
1. What eventually made Carla Toebe realize she was spending too much time on the Internet?
A) Her daughter's repeated complaints.
B) Fatigue resulting from lack of sleep.
C) The poorly managed state of her house.
D) The high financial costs adding up.
A few months ago, it wasn't unusual for 47-year-old Carla Toebe to spend 15 hours per day online. She'd wake up early, turn on her laptop and chat on Internet dating sites and instant-messaging programs C leaving her bed for only brief intervals. Her household bills piled up, along with the dishes and dirty laundry, but it took near-constant complaints from her four daughters before she realized she had a problem.
以本题而言,该段最后一句,尤其是but之后的“it took near-constant complaints from her four daughters before she realized she had a problem”(直到她的四个女儿开始不断发出抱怨的时候她在开始意识到自己出问题了)就是答案所在位置。
6. What did Dale think of Mindsets LLC’s workshop?
A) It was well-intentioned but poorly conducted.
B) It tapped into the executives’ full potential.
C) It helped him make fair decisions.
D) It met participants’ diverse needs.
“I had a management position open in my department ;and the two finalists were a man and a woman . Had I not attended this workshop , I would have automatically assumed the man was the best candidate because the position required quite a bit of extensive travel . …”Dale’s assumptions are another example of the well-intentioned but incorrect thinking that limits an organization’s ability to tap into the full potential of a diverse workforce .
“I learned from the class that instead of imposing my gender biases into the situation , I needed to present the full range of duties, responsibilities and expectations to all candidates and allow them to make an informed decision .” Dale credits the workshop , “because it helped me make decisions based on fairness .”
I learned from the class that instead of imposing my gender biases into the situation(我通过学习知道不能把自己的性别比、偏见带到工作中去)。 最后一句说道“because it helped me make decisions based on fairness”(因为这个研讨班让我能做出公平的选择)。
7. Andrew Heidrich now visits websites that discuss online gaming addiction to __________.
A) improve his online gaming skills
B) curb his desire for online gaming
C) show how good he is at online gaming
D) exchange online gaming experience
Andrew Heidrich, an education network administrator from Sacramento, plays World of Warcraft for about two to four hours every other night, but that's nothing compared with the 40 to 60 hours a week he spent playing online games when he was in college. He cut back only after a full-scale family intervention (干预), in which relatives told him he'd gained weight.
“There's this whole culture of competition that sucks people in” with online gaming, said Heidrich, now a father of two. “People do it at the expense of everything that was a constant in their lives.” Heidrich now visits websites that discuss gaming addiction regularly “to remind myself to keep my love for online games in check.”
Heidrich now visits websites that discuss gaming addiction regularly “to remind myself to keep my love for online games in check.”(Heidirch现在经常浏览那些探讨网友成瘾问题的网站,不时提醒自己克制对网游的喜爱。)
Scanning――
3. What is becoming essential in the course of economic globalization according to the author?
A) Hiring qualified technical and management personnel.
B) Increasing understanding of people of other cultures.
C) Constantly updating knowledge and equipment.
D) Expanding domestic and international markets.
Many of us have had similar encounters with behaviors we perceive as different. As the world becomes smaller and our workplaces more diverse, it is becoming essential to expand our under-standing of others and to reexamine some of our false assumptions. 题目简单就简单在essential之后的部分便是我们要找的内容――expand our under-standing of others and to reexamine some of our false assumptions(加深对异域文化的了解,重新审视自己那些不实的假想),答案选择B。
10. Now that she's got a boyfriend, Toebe is no longer crazy about __________.
Since then, Toebe said, she has kept her promise to herself to cut back on her Internet use. “I have a boyfriend now, and I'm not interested in online dating,” she said by phone last week. “It's a lot better now.”
2. With the increase in the number of TV channels_________.
A) the cost of TV advertising has decreased
B) the nuiflber of TV viewers has increased
C) advertisers' interest in other media has decreased
D) the number of TV ads people can see has increased
Television's influence on advertising is fourfold. First, narrowcasting means that television channels are seen by an increasingly narrow segment of the audience. The Golf Channel, for instance, is watched by people who play golf. Home and Garden Television is seen by those interested in household improvement projects. Thus, audiences are smaller and more homogeneous(具有共同特点的) than they have been in the past. Second, there is an increase in the number of television channels available to viewers, and thus, advertisers. This has also resulted in an increase in the sheer number of advertisements to which audiences are exposed. Third, digital recording devices allow audience members more control over which commercials they watch. Fourth, control over programming is being passed from the networks to local cable operators and satellite programmers.
“there is an increase in the number of television channels available to viewers, and thus, advertisers”――电视频道的增加意味着观众能看到的广告数量增加了。
5. According to Orzack, people who struggle with heavy reliance on the Internet may feel __________.
A) discouraged
B) pressured
C) depressed
D) puzzled
Excessive Internet use should be defined not by the number of hours spent online but “in terms of losses,” said Maressa Orzack, a Harvard University professor. “If it's a loss [where] you're not getting to work, and family relationships are breaking down as a result, then it's too much.”
Since the early 1990s, several clinics have been established in the U. S. to treat heavy Internet users. They include the Center for Internet Addiction Recovery and the Center for Internet Behavior.
The website for Orzack's center lists the following among the psychological symptoms of computer addiction:
…
Physical symptoms listed include dry eyes, backaches, skipping meals, poor personal hygiene (卫生) and sleep disturbances.
People who struggle with excessive Internet use maybe depressed or have other mood disorders, Orzack said. When she discusses Internet habits with her patients, they often report that being online offers a “sense of belonging, and escape, excitement [and] fun,” she said. “Some people say relief…because they find themselves so relaxed.”
果不其然,答案就是“People who struggle with excessive Internet use maybe depressed”――与网络沉迷抗争的人可能会感觉情绪低落,所以该题答案选择C。

Each variety of mosquitos has its favored kind of water accumulation for breeding, and almost every imaginable type of still water has been used by at least one kind of mosquito to lay its eggs. After the eggs hatch, the larvae continue to be closely associated with water’s surface at the tail ends of their bodies. Because the larvae develop this way, they are never found in the open water of lakes where they would merely serve as fish food, or in places where they would be damaged by wave action or water currents.

Let’s talk about tennis between just two players. You know that the two players hit a ball across the net. One side must hit the ball so that the other player cannot hit it back over the net. The ball must stay within the lines. If the first player can’t do this, the opponent gets a point. The players always stop when one wins a point. To start play again, one player will serve. He or she throws the ball into the air and hits it. The ball must cross the net without hitting it. The other player must hit the ball back across the net before it hits the ground twice. If the ball doesn’t hit the net or the ground twice, the players keep hitting it over the net. This goes on until someone misses. A player needs four points to win a game. If both players have three points, then one must get two more points together to win. When one player wins six games, it is called a set. If each side wins five games, then one must win two more games together to win the set. If each player wins six games, they play one more game of seven points. A match usually has three or five sets.

1、因果关系:as aresult,therefore,hence,consequently,because,for,due to,hence,consequently等等。
2、并列、递进关系:and,or,then,in addition,besides,in other words,moreover等等
3、转折关系:however,but,yet,in fact等等。
You have just finished your meal at afast food restaurant and you throw your uneaten food, food wrappers, drink cups, utensils and napkins into the trash can.You don't think about that waste again. On trash pickup day in your neighborhood, you push your can out to the curb, and workers dump the contents into abig truck and haul it away. You don't have to think about that waste again, either. But maybe you have wondered,as you watch the trash truck pull away, just where that garbage ends up。
Along the site, there are drop-off stations for materials that are not wanted or legally banned by the landfill.A multi-material drop-off station is used for tires, motor oil,lead-acid batteries. Some of these materials can be recycled。
In addition, there is ahousehold hazardous waste drop-off station for chemicals(paints, pesticides, other chemicals)that are banned from the landfill. These chemicals are disposed of by private companies。
n Dump-an open hole in the ground where trash is buried and that is full of various animals(rats, mice, birds).(This is most people's idea of alandfill!)
n Landfill-carefully designed structure built into or on top of the ground in which trash is isolated from the surrounding environment(groundwater, air, rain). This isolation is accomplished with abottom liner and daily covering of soil。
Sanitary landfill-land fill that uses aclay liner to isolate the trash from the environment
Municipal solid waste(MSW)landfill-landfill that uses asynthetic(plastic)liner to isolate the trash from the environment
Of the 210million tons of trash,or solid waste,generated in the United States annually,about 56million tons,or 27percent,is either recycled(glass,paper products,plastic,metals)or composted(做成堆肥)(yard waste)。
再如:
The trash production in the United States has almost tripled since 1960.This trash is handled in various ways.About 27percent of the trash is recycled or composted,16percent is burned and 57percent is buried in landfills. The amount of trash buried in landfills has doubled since 1960.
In the United States the building of landfills is the job of both federal and local governments。
在判断时,一些特殊的用词,“United States”,“building of landfills”都提示我们顺利找到原文的“In the United States, taking care of trash and building landfills are local government responsibilities。”
To dispose of aton of trash in alandfill, customers have to pay atipping fee of.则可以通过“customers”、“tipping fee”找到原文“Customers are charged tipping fees for using the site. The tipping fees vary from$10to$40per ton。”
5、选词填空一定要优先考虑固定搭配,比如:make contribution to;have an impact/effect on这样的高频词组考过多次。
7、段落推断题中(含有infer/conclude/imply/indicate/learn的题目),答案一般在转折处或者在段落末句。
如:no,all,only,must,little,always,none.
9、仔细阅读要重点注意转折处(but/however/yet)信息以及递进关系(moreover/also/furthermore/in addition)信息。

1.文章的体裁一般为说明文,有大标题,也可能有小标题;即使没有小标题,说明的层次也非常清楚;
2.文章长度大约为1000~1200词,难度适中,基本没有超纲词汇;即使有超纲词汇,也不会影响阅读理解,或者会用汉语在原文中注明;
1.要熟练运用“定位法”(详见《大学英语四级考试一本通关――命题剖析与应试指导》一书),尤其要善于快速发现题干中的关键词或关键信息,在最短的时间内快速定位,并能够结合全文深入理解定位部分的内容;
2.对于有小标题的文章,一定要预先弄清楚各个小标题自身的含义及其相互之间的关系;对于没有小标题的文章,要从整体上把握文章的脉络结构以及说明顺序等宏观内容;
了解作者要表达的主要思想;
了解文章的主要内容和次要内容,并能把他们区分开来;
了解并记住文章中最重要的内容;
了解文章结构以及事件发生的时间、空间顺序;
了解作者的观点、意图、写作风格及其偏见等;
用自己的阅历和知识对文章进行分析、评价,得出自己的体会;
III.
Few creations of big technology capture the imagination like giant dams. Perhaps it is humankind’s long suffering at the mercy of flood and drought that makes the idea of forcing the waters to do our bidding so fascinating. But to be fascinated is also, sometimes, to be blind. Several giant dam projects threaten to do more harm than good.
The lesson from dams is that big is not always beautiful. It doesn’t help that building a big, powerful dam has become a symbol of achievement for nations and people striving to assert themselves. Egypt’s leadership in the Arab world was cemented by the Aswan High Dam. Turkey’s bid for First World status includes the giant Ataturk Dam.
But big dams tend not to work as intended. The Aswan Dam, for example, stopped the Nile flooding but deprived Egypt of the fertile silt that floods left — all in return for a giant reservoir of disease which is now so full of silt that it barely generates electricity.
And yet, the myth of controlling the waters persists. This week, in the heart of civilized Europe, Slovaks and Hungarians stopped just short of sending in the troops in their contention over a dam on the Danube. The huge complex will probably have all the usual problems of big dams. But Slovakia is bidding for independence from the Czechs, and now needs a dam to prove itself.
Meanwhile, in India, the World Bank has given the go-ahead to the even more wrong-headed Narmada Dam. And the bank has done this even though its advisors say the dam will cause hardship for the powerless and environmental destruction. The benefits are for the powerful, but they are far from guaranteed.
Proper, scientific study of the impacts of dams and of the costs and benefits of controlling water can help to resolve these conflicts. Hydroelectric power and flood control and irrigation are possible without building monster dams. But when you are dealing with myths, it is hard to be either proper, or scientific. It is time that the world learned the lessons of Aswan. You don’t need a dam to be saved.

3. What is the myth concerning giant dams?
A. They bring in more fertile soil. B. They help defend the country.
C. They strengthen international ties. D. They have universal control of the waters.
4. What the author tries to suggest may best be interpreted as ____.
A. “It’s no use crying over spilt milk” B. “More haste, less speed”

If ambition is to be well regarded, the rewards of ambition — wealth, distinction, control over one’s destiny — must be deemed worthy of the sacrifices made on ambition’s behalf. If the tradition of ambition is to have vitality, it must be widely shared; and it especially must be highly regarded by people who are themselves admired, the educated not least among them. In an odd way, however, it is the educated who have claimed to have given up on ambition as an ideal. What is odd is that they have perhaps most benefited from ambition — if not always their own then that of their parents and grandparents. There is a heavy note of hypocrisy in this, a case of closing the barn door after the horses have escaped — with the educated themselves riding on them.
Certainly people do not seem less interested in success and its signs now than formerly. Summer homes, European travel, BMWs — the locations, place names and name brands may change, but such items do not seem less in demand today than a decade or two years ago. What has happened is that people cannot confess fully to their dreams, as easily and openly as once they could, lest they be thought pushing, acquisitive and vulgar. Instead, we are treated to fine hypocritical spectacles, which now more than ever seem in ample supply: the critic of American materialism with a Southampton summer home; the publisher of radical books who takes his meals in three-star restaurants; the journalist advocating participatory democracy in all phases of life, whose own children are enrolled in private schools. For such people and many more perhaps not so exceptional, the proper formulation is, “Succeed at all costs but avoid appearing ambitious.”
The attacks on ambition are many and come from various angles; its public defenders are few and unimpressive, where they are not extremely unattractive. As a result, the support for ambition as a healthy impulse, a quality to be admired and fixed in the mind of the young, is probably lower than it has ever been in the United States. This does not mean that ambition is at an end, that people no longer feel its stirrings and promptings, but only that, no longer openly honored, it is less openly professed. Consequences follow from this, of course, some of which are that ambition is driven underground, or made sly. Such, then, is the way things stand: on the left angry critics, on the right stupid supporters, and in the middle, as usual, the majority of earnest people trying to get on in life.
1. It is generally believed that ambition may be well regarded if ____.
A. its returns well compensate for the sacrifices
B. it is rewarded with money, fame and power
C. its goals are spiritual rather than material
D. it is shared by the rich and the famous
2. The last sentence of the first paragraph most probably implies that it is ____.
A. customary of the educated to discard ambition in words
B. too late to check ambition once it has been let out
C. dishonest to deny ambition after the fulfillment of the goal
D. impractical for the educated to enjoy benefits from ambition
3. Some people do not openly admit they have ambition because ____.
A. they think of it as immoral
B. their pursuits are not fame or wealth
C. ambition is not closely related to material benefits
D. they do not want to appear greedy and contemptible
4. From the last paragraph the conclusion can be drawn that ambition should be maintained ____.
A. secretly and vigorously B. openly and enthusiastically
C. easily and momentarily D. verbally and spiritually

People living on parts of the south coast of England face a serious problem. In 1993, the owners of a large hotel and of several houses discovered, to their horror, that their gardens had disappeared overnight. The sea had eaten into the soft limestone cliffs on which they had been built. While experts were studying the problem, the hotel and several houses disappeared altogether, sliding down the cliff and into the sea.
Erosion (侵蚀) of the white cliffs along the south coast of England has always been a problem but it has become more serious in recent years. Dozens of homes have had to be abandoned as the sea has crept farther and farther inland. Experts have studied the areas most affected and have drawn up a map for local people, forecasting the year in which their homes will be swallowed up by the hungry sea.
Angry owners have called on the Government to erect sea defenses to protect their homes. Government surveyors have pointed out that in most cases, this is impossible. New sea walls would cost hundreds of millions of pounds and would merely make the waves and currents go further along the coast, shifting the problem from one area to another. The danger is likely to continue, they say, until the waves reach an inland area of hard rock which will not be eaten as limestone is. Meanwhile, if you want to buy a cheap house with an uncertain future, apply to a house agent in one of the threatened areas on the south coast of England. You can get a house for a knockdown price but it may turn out to be a knockdown home.
1. What is the cause of the problem that people living on parts of the south coast of England face?
A) The disappearance of hotels, houses and gardens.
B) The experts’ lack of knowledge.
C) The rising of the sea level.
D) The washing-away of limestone cliffs.
2. The erosion of the white cliffs in the south of England ________.
A) will soon become a problem for people living in central England
B) has now become a threat to the local residents
C) is quickly changing the map of England
D) can be stopped if proper measures are taken
3. The experts’study on the problem of erosion can ________.
A) lead to its eventual solution
B) provide an effective way to slow it down
C) help to prevent it from worsening
D) warn people whose homes are in danger
4. It is not feasible to build sea defenses to protect against erosion because ________.
A) it is too costly and will endanger neighbouring areas
B) the government is too slow in taking action
C) they will be easily knocked down by waves and currents
D) house agents along the coast do not support the idea
5. According to the author, when buying a house along the south coast of England, people should ________.
A) be aware of the potential danger involved
B) guard against being cheated by the house agent
C) take the quality of the house into consideration
D) examine the house carefully before making a decision
