The popular notion that older people need less sleep than younger adults is a myth, scientists said yesterday.

While elderly people __1__ to sleep for fewer hours than they did when they were younger, this has a(n) __2__ effect on their brain's performance and they would benefit from getting more, according to research.

Sean Drummond, a. psychiatrist (心理医生) at the University of California, San Diego, said older people are more likely to suffer from broken sleep, while younger people are better at sleeping __3__ straight through the night.

More sleep in old age, however, is __4__ with better health, and most older people would feel better and more __5__ if they slept for longer periods, he said.

“The ability to sleep in one chunk (整块时间) overnight goes down as we age but the amount of sleep we need to __6__ well does not change,” Dr Drummond told the American Association for the Advancement of Science conference in San Diego.

“It's __7__ a myth that older people need less sleep. The more healthy an older adult is, the more they sleep like they did when they were __8__. Our data suggests that older adults would benefit from __9__ to get as much sleep as they did in their 30s. That's __10__ from person to person, but the amount of sleep we had at 35 is probably the same amount as we need at 75.”

[A] alert

[B] associated

[C] attracting

[D] cling

[E] continuing

[F] definitely

[G] different

[H] efficiently

[I] formally

[J] function

[K] mixed

[L] negative

[M] sufficient

[N] tend

[O] younger

1. N tend tend to 固定搭配;表示“倾向于;”符合句意;

4. B associated be associated with 固定搭配;表示“与…联系在一起”;本句话表示“更多的睡眠通常都与健康度联系在一起”;

5. A alert 先看整句话的含义,“如果他们能睡更长的时间,他们的感觉应该会更好以及…”那么,该处应该填入一个褒义词,选择alert比较恰当,表示“更加警觉,机灵”;

6. J function 根据判断,此处应该填入一个动词,剩下的动词有cling, function;整句话的意思是“当我们上了年纪的时候,我们一觉睡到天亮的能力下降了,但是,我们需要…的睡眠量并没有改变;”空格后的单词是 well, cling 在这里并不合适,一般与to连用;选用function 最为适合;

7. F definitely 作者在首段已经提出这个观点是一个myth,那么显而易见最后一段中出现的myth是作为一种强调手段,应填入definitely;

8. O younger 空格的前面是 when they were…, “当他们年轻的时候”;应填入younger;

9. E continuing 本句的意思是“我们的数据显示老年人将从…获益;”空格的后面是“得到和他们在三十多岁的时候能得到的睡眠一样多”;根据上下文意思,该处应填入“continuing”;

The Art of Friendship

A) One evening a few years ago I found myself in an anxiety. Nothing was really wrong my family and I were healthy, my career was busy and successful -- I was just feeling vaguely down and in need of a friend who could raise my spirits, someone who would meet me for coffee and let merant until the clouds lifted. I dialed my best friend, who now lives across the country in California, and got her voicemail. That's when it started to dawn on me -- lonesomeness was at the root of my dreariness. My social life had dwindled to almost nothing, but somehow until that moment I'd been too busy to notice. Now it hit me hard. My old friends, buddies since college or even childhood, know everything about me; when they left, they had taken my context with them.

B) Research has shown the long-range negative consequences of social isolation on one's health. But my concerns were more short-term. I needed to feel understood right then in the way that only a girlfriend can understand you. I knew it would be wrong to expect my husband to replace my friends: He couldn't, and even if he could, to whom would I then complain about my husband? So I resolved to acquire new friends -- women like me who had kids and enjoyed rolling their eyes at the worlda little bit just as I did. Since I'd be making friends with more intention than I'd ever given the process, I realized I could be selective, that I could in effect design my own social life. The down side, of course, was that I felt pretty frightened.

C) After all, it's a whole lot harder to make friends in midlife that it is when yon're younger -- a fact woman I've spoken with point out again and again. As Leslie Danzig, 41, a Chicago theater director and mother, sees it, when you're in your teens and 20s, you're more or less friends with everyone unless there's a reason not to be. Your college roommate becomes your best pal at least partly due to proximity. Now there needs to be a reason to be friends. “There are many people I'm comfort-able around, but I wouldn't go so far as to call them friends. Comfort isn't enough to sustain a real friendship,” Danzig says.

D) At first, finding new companions felt awkward. At 40 I couldn't run up to people the way my4-year-old daughters do in the playground and ask, “Will you be my friend? Every time you start anew relationship, you're vulnerable again,” agrees Kathleen Hall, D Min, founder and CEO of the Stress Institute, in Atlanta. “You're asking, 'Would you like to come into my life?' It makes us self-conscious.”

E) Fortunately, my discomfort soon passed. I realized that as a mature friend seeker my vulnerability risk was actually pretty low. If someone didn't take me up on my offer, so what: I wasn't in junior high, when I might have been rejected for having the wrong clothes or hair. At my age I have amassed enough self-esteem to realize that I have plenty to offer.

F) We're all so busy, in fact, that mutual interests -- say, in a project, class, or cause that we already make time for -- become the perfect catalysts for bringing us in contact with candidates for camaraderie. Michelle Mertes, 35, a teacher and mother of two in Wausau, Wisconsin, says anew friend she made at church came as a pleasant surprise. “In high school I chose friends based on their popular-ity and how being part of their circle might reflect on me. Now's it's our shared values and activities that count.” Mertes says her pal, with whom she organized the church's youth programs, is nothing like her but their drive and organizational skills make them ideal friends.

G) Happily, as awkward as making new friends can be, self-esteem issues do not factor in -- or if they do, you can easily put them into perspective. Danzig tells of the mother of a child in her son's pre-school, a tall, beautiful woman who is married to a big-deal rock musician. “I said to my husband, she's too cool for me,'” she jokes. “I get intimidated by people. But once I got to know her, she turned out to be pretty laid-back and friendly.” In the end there was no chemistry between them, so they didn't become good pals. “I realized that we weren't each other's type, but it wasn't about hierarchy.” What midlife friendship is about, it seems, is reflecting the person you've become (or are still becoming) back at yourself, thus reinforcing the progress you've made in your life.

H) Harlene Katzman, 41, a lawyer in New York City, notes that her oldest friends knew her back when she was less sure of herself. As much as she loves them, she believes they sometimes respond to is-sues in light of who she once was. An old chum has the goods on you. With recently made friends, you can turn over a new leaf.

I) A new friend, chosen right, can also help you point your boat in the direction you want to go. Hanna Dershowitz, 39, an attorney and mother in Los Angeles, found that a new acquaintance from workwas exactly what she needed in a friend. In addition to liking and respecting Julia, Dershowitz had a feeling that the fit and athletic younger woman would help her to get in shape.

J) While you're busy making new friends, remember that you still need to nurture your old ones. We asked Marla Paul, author of The Friendship Crisis: Finding, Making, and Keeping Friends When You “re Not a Kid Anymore, for the best ways to maintain these important relationships. Keep in touch. Your friends should be a priority; schedule regular lunch dates or coffee catch-up sessions, no matter how busy you are. Know her business. Keep track of important events in a friend's life and show your support. Call or e-mail to let her know you're thinking of her. Speak your mind. Tell a friend (politely) if something she did really upset you. If you can't be totally honest, then you need to reexamine the relationship. Accept her flaws. No one is perfect, so work around her quirks --she's chronically late, or she's a bit negative -- to cut down on frustration and fights. Boost her ego. Heartfelt compliments make everyone feel great, so tell her how much you love her new sweater or what a great job she did on a work project.

46. Leslie Danzig thought making friends at one's middle age needed some reasons.

47. A well-chosen new friend can help you go in the direction that you like.

48. A few years ago the author felt lonely and depressed when she phoned her best friend in another city who was much wanted then but unavailable.

49. According to Kathleen Hall, one might feel sensitive in the first curse of making new friends.

52. For the author, a girl friend might be the right person to under ”stand her and erase her negative feeling.

53. According to Michelle Metes, midlife friendship is based on the shared values and activities

54. As a mature friend seeker, the author finds herself with enough confidence to offer and take rejection with grace.

55. With newly made friends, you can have a chance to take on a new look in your life.

Section B

In many traditional societies a woman's role is restricted to that of mother (for the continuation of the race) , and she is confined to family and household activities, including help out in the field and market. In some ethnic(种族的) communities in Indonesia, even today, women are supposed to do the hard labor in the rice fields, while men take it easy in their coffee shops.

When I visited the island of Timor in eastern Indonesia in 1987, I was told by friends that in the interior of the islands, where roads are still non-existent,villagers traveled to market either on foot or on horseback. It was a common sight to see the husband riding a horse, with his wife walking behind him carrying a heavy bundle of produce on her head to the market. On the island of Alor, also in eastern Indonesia, I met an old man aged about 80 years, proudly boasting to me that he had nine wives. “But you are a Catholic,” I said to him. “How could you have nine wives?” He smiled, and said: “I married only once in church, but the other eight wives I married according to our traditional laws. ” In many ethnic communities in Indonesia the good woman or wife is one who obey her husband, who does not go around gossiping, who cleans her home and cooks good food for the family, who is diligent in the field, who does not visit friends too much, and who gives birth of lots of children, especially boys.

In Indonesia many years ago the wives of government workers or members of the armed forces were organized into women's organizations. The leadership of these women's organizations was set up according to the hierarchical positions of the members' husbands. For example, the organization of women of personnel of a government ministry would automatically have as its chairperson the wife of the minister at the national level, and the chairperson of the provincial organization would be the wife of the governor, and so on to the lower administrative levels. It is amazing how a woman who may have an interest in being a leader nevertheless automatically becomes a chairperson because of the official position of her husband. When the husband is no longer minister or governor, she also automatically loses her position. Many of these women have complained to me that they feel this is a straitjacket(约束物) imposed on them, but they feel they have to accept the role for the sake of safeguarding their husbands' careers.

26. In some ethnic districts in Indonesia women should_______.

A. do household activities B. give birth of children

C. do the hard labor in the fields D. all of the above

27. In the 2nd paragraph “roads” means_______.

A. some roads B. high ways

C. country roads D. heavy roads

28. What does the question “How could you have nine wives?” imply?

A. The old man is too old to have nine wives.

B. The old man shouldn't have had nine wives.

C. The old man could marry only once because he is member of the Church of Rome.

D. The old man could have only a wife for he is a Christian.

29. Which of the following is NOT TRUE according to Paragraph 3?

A. Women's organizations were set up in the government administrative levels and the armed forces.

B. The head of the women's organization of a province must be the wife of the governor.

C. All the leaders of the woman's organizations enjoyed their roles.

D. The wife of a governor loses her leading position for the sake of her husband. 30. The closest restatement of the last sentence in,the 3rd paragraph is______.

A. many women would hate to be the chairperson without considering their husband's careers

B. many governors' wives complain they have to accept the chairperson roles

C. many women are forced to become the leaders of women's organizations in order to protect their husband's profession

D. many governors' wives feel it necessary to accept the roles

D 27. B 28. C 29. C 30. C

The future population will be older than today, and this in turn will change the patterns of social demands. However, Mexico will still be far from the “aging societies” that will most likely prevail (占优势 ) in the industrialized countries. In less than 25 years, the country will have to add almost as much infrastructure as it has already built up to now, simply to maintain services and production at the current levels. This will be a tremendous challenge, although a similar one was faced successfully in the recent past, when available infrastructure was doubled in two decades or so. It is no wonder that much has been said about the need to reduce or preferably halt Mexico's population control which is taken for granted as both good and necessary. It has also gained supporters in the developing world, and Mexico is no exception. But the arguments about population are complicated, as the following discussion illustrates.

Even if Mexico's population reaches 125 million by the year 2010, its population density is still smaller than the 1985 population density of some 50 countries. By international standards Mexico will still not be overpopulated by the year 2010. If wealth is generated by people, the more individuals there are, the greater the wealth that potentially could be generated. Why should Mexico control its population at density levels below those of the richer countries if more population represents the possibility of generating more wealth?

On the other hand, it is often pointed out that once sustainability(支撑力) limits are near or are reached, there are decreasing productivity gains (or,perhaps more accurately, increasing productive losses) , and people become a cost rather than an asset. If we assume that there are sustainability limits and that we are close to reaching these limits at a world level, then it is appropriate to check population growth.

21. According to the passage, the population argument is focused on_______.

A. whether more people are a property or a cost

B. whether Mexico should control its population growth or not

C. whether the density of population in Mexico is large or small

D. what the standard international sustainability limit is

22. Which of the following is TRUE according to the first paragraph?

A. Mexico has stepped into an aging society.

B. It is not necessary for Mexico to control its population.

C. Mexico population is younger than that of developed countries.

D. It is not necessary for Mexico to develop its infrastructure.

23. By “infrastructure”(Para. 2) the author means_______.

A. buildings

B. the basic framework of a country, such as schools, services, etc.

C. social demands

D. services and production

24. It may be inferred from the 3rd paragraph that_______.

A. it isn't necessary for Mexico to control its population growth

B. population is likely to grow at a slower pace than in the past

C. the more people there are, the greater the wealth people could generate

D. Mexico should control its population growth because she belongs to the developing countries

25. To check population growth is necessary when_______.

A. there are decreasing productivity gains

B. there are increasing productivity losses

C. we are close to reaching the sustainability limits at a world level

D. people become a cost

B 22. C 23. B 24. A 25. C

Should Food Be Banned on the Subway?

Currently, some cities are considering a food ban on subways, which has sparked heated discussion. Some people say food should be banned because of the trash and rats they attract. And, garbage from discarded food can cause track fires. Beyond sanitary and mechanical concerns, food can also cause fights, as was discovered last week by one passenger who criticized a woman eating steamed stuffed bun on the subway.

However, some others are opposed to the idea. They argue that people like eating in the train in the morning because they don't have enough time to eat at their houses or restaurants. Sometimes that may be the only time or meal a transit rider may be able to eat especially when traveling long distances. Besides, there are people, for example diabetics, who do require food at various times to maintain blood-sugar levels.

Personally, I'm against the ban because of the huge inconvenience it would cause to commuters, and the expense involved in enforcing it. Still, I believe we should have a little common courtesy. I think we all have responsibility to try to treat our subway system and fellow riders with respect, and that extends to food as well.

Some people enjoy living together with their parents after they have grown up. They hold the opinion because, living with parents, they can take better care of their parents and vice versa. Meanwhile, they can turn to their parents for help if they get into trouble or have some difficulties. To them, life in a big family seems to be more enjoyable than that in a small family.

Others, however, prefer to live separately. They cherish the idea to be independent of their parents, seek more freedom and wish to have a place of their own, in which they can do what they like. Bedsides, they don't want to be overprotected by their parents but long for chance to face the society by themselves.

As to me, I like an independent life style in spite of the fact I love my parents. Different generations have different life styles and values. What one generations likes may not be another generation's fondness. Living separately, each generation can enjoy different value. In addition, by leading an independent life, I can train my character and develop my own ability to deal with things encountered in my life.

Dear Shitou,

So great to receive your letter on May 1st, in which you inquired about my plan after graduation. Now, I am writing to illustrate it and my accounts。

As is known to all, so many graduates are eager to set feet on their work-life roads. According to a survey by National Department of Education, more than six million college students will leave the so called “Ivory Tower” this year. It is clear that the competition of job-hunting will be extremely furious. On the contrary, it seems advisable for me to further my study and get a master’s degree. What makes me convinced is that a higher degree and better educational background will, undoubtedly, enable me to make full preparation for entering the society. Besides, if possible, I will get involved in social and practical activities in my spare time。

Taking all aspects into account, I choose to study as a postgraduate。

Many thanks for your concern. Best wishes!

On Cultivating the Sense of Gratitude

On college campuses across the nation, there is a noticeable phenomenonthat we cannot afford to ignore: far too many young college students lack thesense of gratitude, one of the countless traditional virtues of this ancientland with a splendid civilization spanning over 5,000 years. These young adultswere not and are not aware of the huge importance of expressing gratitude tothose who once helped them, from teachers to parents and so forth。

Personally, I deem that the root cause of students without a graceful heartis that they receive an education not valuing the moral sphere. I stronglybelieve that joint efforts from folks across society are the final remedy forthis social headache. As young university students of the new era, we shouldmake our own contributions to this cause. Imagine a world without the sense ofgratitude. This kind of world is doomed to failure. Simply put, we should joinour hands to heighten our awareness of fostering a graceful heart. Only in thisway can we build our society into a harmonious one. On Uncivilized Behaviors

We cannot fail to notice that countless uncivilized behaviors exist in ourdaily lives, such as spitting, talking loudly, littering, saying nasty words inpublic places and so forth. All these are bad manners that we should not losesight of. As an ancient land enjoying a splendid civilization spanning over5,000 years, China is witnessing a surge in improper acts that every Chinesecitizen should feel ashamed of. Uncivilized behaviors by a host of Chinese bothat home and abroad have seriously affected China's image, according to aneditorial posted on People Daily's official website.

As Chinese, we should not get offended when others point out our weaknessesbut should focus more attention on improving ourselves. We should strive toidentify the causes of those improper behaviors and find ways to eliminatethem. There are a host of causes, I would argue, behind this trend. To nameonly one: the lack of moral education. The government should wage a massivemoral campaign to fight against this trend and we ourselves should endeavor tobehave decently in our daily lives. As college students of the new age, weshould take the leading role.

Health and Life

As the saying goes, you don’t know what happiness is until you lose it’ you don’t know whathealth is until you are ill. “Health is of vital importance to life” soundslike a cliche to everyone, but it is absolutely true.

The negligence of the delicatebalance of your body and soul, the harmful habits such assmoking, excessive drinking and burningmid-night oil will catch up with you someday. How many big plans areinterrupted by bad health! Even a normal life is unimaginable without theguarantee of health.

How to keep fit is an eternaltopic of diversity and controversy. Regardless of all the different suggestionspoured from all kinds of sources, one should do at least two thingsfor him/herself. First, hold an active and optimisticattitude toward life and maintain a mental well-being. Second, live a regular life and keep a balanced diet. Anyway, a healthy life is within reach when you begin to adjust your mind andbody.

Should governments spend moremoney on improving roads and highways, or shouldgovernments spend more money on improving public transportation (buses, trains, subways)? Why? Use specificreasons and details to develop your essay.

Good transportation is veryimportant to the success of both individuals and a city. Without efficientmeans of transportation, people will waste a great dealof time going to and from work. This will make them tired and less productivein their jobs. People may rely on either private or public transportation toget them to and from work. If a choice has to be made between spending money onimproving the roads for private vehicles or improving public transportation, I would choose the latter for the following reasons.

First of all, better public transportation systems, including buses, trains and subways, will encourage more people touse them rather than drive their own cars. This will reduce the total amount oftraffic on the roads and make travel quicker for everyone. Second, using public transportation saves energy.

OnCredit Card

At present, a wide ofcredit cards issued by major banks and shopping malls are thriving in collegesand universities across the nation, with a multitude of college students makingup a growing population of card holders. Indeed, one out of five students isestimated to be in possession of at least one credit card, and the figure isexpected to be on the steady , thelatest data published by Yangtze Evening Post suggests。

Like anything prior tothe emergence of this small piece of plastic, the increasing popularity ofcredit card on campus has both bright and dark sides. On the one hand, youngadults in college, free from the trouble of pocketing a considerable sum ofcash, could enjoy the convenience of credit cards and purchase expensive goodsby installments. On the other hand, however, the irresponsible and excessiveuse of the cards by these youngsters, the majority of whom are fresh out ofmiddle school incapable of budgeting their money, can make them heavily in debtwhich will take them years to pay off。

On my personal level, while enjoying a host of conveniences the credit card may bring, we couldn'tafford to ignore a fact: in most cases, parents are our sole financial sources.Instead of spending without anyrestrict, we are supposed to put studies on the top of our agenda and moveourselves beyond heavy dependence upon our parents。

Should College Students Be Allowed to GetMarried?

Thereis no denying the fact that it is a hotly debated topic today whether collegestudents should be allowed to get married. Some time ago, the ban was lifted bysome universities on students getting married. To this people’s attitudesdiffer sharply. Some hold the positive view. They say that most collegestudents are adults and that it is a basic right for those who have reached theappropriate ages to get married.

Manyothers, however, hold the opposite view. They claim that the university orcollege is a place to study instead of a community to lead a family life. Allowingcollege students to get married would adversely affect their study. Forinstance, they would spend too much time attending their family and love, unable to concentrate on their school work.

Asfar as I am concerned, I believe that it is OK to allow college students to getmarried. Anyway, this is their freedom. Actually, we don’t have to worry toomuch because facts have shown that most college students would choose not toget married in the face of such fierce competition and heavy school work.

(或 Asfar as I am concerned, I believe that college students should not be allowed toget married. Though mostly adults, they are actually immature psychologically.Their wish to get married is, more often than not, impulses. Besides, asstudents, they are not ready to support a family financially.)

Why Are There So Many Rural Laborers in Big Cities?

For a number of years, there has been a steady rise in the number of rurallaborers who flood into big cities. Many men work on construction sites, whilemany women work as dishwashers in restaurants or babysitters for city dwellers.Three reasons, in my mind, can account for this social phenomenon.

First and foremost, the limited land can no longer produce enough crops foran ever-increasing rural population. In the second place, there are far moreopportunities in big cities—rural laborers dream of earning money through hardwork. Last but by no means least, many of them want to live permanently in bigcities, because they admire the way of living there, and wish their children toreceive good education.

I firmly believe that if we try our best to create a healthy socialatmosphere, rural laborers will make greater contribution to our nation.

How do movies or television influence people’sbehavior? Use reasons and specific examples to supportyour answer.

The Influence of Television and Movies

There is no doubt that watchingtelevision and movies can influence the way that people behave. Moreover, it seems that people are spending more and more time watching some sort ofvisual entertainment, whether it is television, a video tape or a DVD. Therefore, the effects ofvisual media cannot be ignored.

One obvious effect of these mediais that watching them induces people to buy certain products. Televisionadvertising is widespread and, nowadays, even movie theaters permit advertisements. Another way TV and the moviesaffect people is that they give people either a broader view of the world or adistorted one, depending on what type ofprogram they watch. Those who watch news and educational program can learn manynew things while those who watch primarily entertainment shows may come tobelieve that most people in the world possess great wealth and good looks. Itmay make them become dissatisfied with their own lives. Finally, perhaps the most susceptible viewers are children, who may be unable to tell fact from fiction and may try to imitate actsthat they see on TV or in the movies.

With the ever-increasing popularity of video entertainment, society must pay attention to these effects. Television and movies, while entertaining and informative, cannot take theplace of real experience.
