in some countries, students pay their college or university fees, while in some others, government pays for them. Do you think the advantages that government pays the money outweigh thedisadvantages? Give reasons and examples.

Some people believe everyone has the right to get university education,to what extent do you agree government should make it free to all people no matter of their financial background? .09.06

Higher education has several ways to be funded:

all costs paid by government

all costs paid by students

students could get government loan and after finishing the education students should repaid the cost to the government.

discuss the benefits of these three theories above and decide which is the best way ..09.22

Education is universallydeemed as the dutyof the government, butwhen it comes to higher level, opinions diverge. Some taxpayers take for grantedthat governments should pay for tertiary study. However, I doubt the feasibility of such practice inmany economies.

Of course calling for public funding foruniversity or college is reasonable from some perspectives. The first beneficiary should be those in poverty or indisadvantageous situation whononethelessperformwell academically and hold the ambition to further theireducation to higher level. They are treated equallyto the access to higher education andit is thisequality that gives them an opportunity to break theirvicious cycle of poverty or crime and to make contribution tobetter life in their hometown when they graduate. In this scenario the nation is able to foster a larger numberof professionals and gain economic and social benefit frombetter human capital.

However, such practice is rarely implemented in the worldincluding some wealthy countries and the direct reason liesin financial issue. Compulsory primary and secondaryeducation usually does not leave the government sufficientbudget for further support in many countries. In addition, going to university is personal choice, which means thatit would be unfair for those who chooseto work after secondary school. An obvious downside of freeuniversity would encourage every school leaver to attenduniversity, butit is also clear that not everyone isable to or is willing to do so.

In my opinion, to harmonize the above conflictcaused by free higher education, a practical suggestion canbe that the government fund university education by offering interest-free loan or grantingscholarship tothose poor but outstanding students.

1. universally

The newspaper will remain to be an important source of people’s news consumption, even though other media may get the upper hand. Many predict that the print’s days are numbered due to strong competition from television, radio and the Internet. In terms of popularity, newspaper is statistically down but is not emotionally out.

Statistically, it can be said that the print news audiences are dwindling, which means newspaper readership is getting eclipsed by other ways of learning about news. It is a long, slow and painful downward spiral to the point that the newspaper, like vinyl records and film cameras, is a relic for collectors. According to research reports on the news industry, local television is the number one source of news for the majority of people, with digital news coming in second, followed by the radio, and then by the newspaper. One possible explanation why the newspaper is being left far behind is that many people do not see the point in buying a print newspaper if they believe they can get all the news they need elsewhere for free.

Nevertheless, for emotional reasons print newspapers will continue to exist for a good while. To begin with, the feeling of a warm newspaper right off the press is one of traditional readers’ favorite moments to begin a regular day. Unlike other ways of delivering news, a print newspaper can be physically held in a reader’s hands, and this is a huge pro for print editions. In addition, newspapers can provide opportunities for longer, more in-depth feature articles that tend to be read in full. Instead of becoming a thing of the past, print newspapers are still widely read and preferred by many audiences.

In conclusion, the golden days of print news are gone forever, but nothing is like the feeling of physically holding a newspaper in hands. After all, the different ways of learning about news are not mutually exclusive. Each news media outlet is effective in its own way. (338 words)

There are many advertisements directed at children, such as snacks, toys and other goods. Parents argue that children are under pressure. Advertisers claim that the advertisements provide useful information. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.(有许多针对儿童的广告,如零食、玩具和其他商品。

As children grow to be the target group of advertisement industry, a range of advertisements aimed at them have been produced, which had caused some controversies in the society.

Those who advocate the spread of advertising targeted at children deem that these advertisements can provide potential customers with a comprehensive understanding of the products advertised, which can help consumers make well-informed buying decisions. Since television advertisements can present goods in a visual and audio way, this can definitely enhance people’s knowledge of the advertised goods, especially some electronic toys or newly-introduced food.

On the other hand, parents are concerned that children are easily attracted by the vivid advertisement from the Internet or television, and because of it, kids will pester their parents to buy the goods advertised. Obviously, children are a group of consumers without the ability to distinguish good from bad and right from wrong. If they are convinced of the benefits of the products from the advertisement, they will not consider the negative aspects or further explore the truth of the advertisement itself.

Besides, peer pressure is another point which needs to be mentioned here. The widespread advertising campaign will make the public overwhelmed by these advertisements, which means there will always be some parents and children purchasing the advertised goods, and therefore, some psychological factor of children may urge a part of them to obtain the products even though they may not need the goods.

Personally, advertisements themselves contain a lot of information which can be quite useful for consumers. If the advertising industry can be well regulated and children being supervised when they are watching the advertisements, there is no need for parents to worry about the side effects by the widespread advertisements.

When people visit other countries they often find the customsof dressing and behavior are different than in their home country. Should visitors adopt the customs of the country they visit or should they follow the customs of their own country?

范文:

Many people wonder what to do when they visit other countries. Some people think it is best for them to adopt the local customs. However, other people think it is best to follow the customs of their own countries. This is not an easy question to answer but in this essaywe will look at this issue.

Some things that visitors may do are immoralor even illegal according to the customs of the local country. For example, in certain countries it is considered bad to show affection in public like men and women kissing or holding hands. It may also be very bad for women to wear revealing clothing such as a short skirt or see-through blouse. In these countries it may also be illegalto drink alcohol.

Adopting to the local customs can show respect. Wearing a suit and tie can show respect if that is what the people of the country wear at a meeting or formalevent. Men will take their hat off or women will cover their heads to show respect when entering a holy place.

Many aver giving detailed information about crimes committed via TV and printed media has an adverse impact on the public. Thus, this practice ought to be prohibited. I disagree with this prospect and below the reasons on which my stance is based will be discussed in details.

On the other hand, publishing detailed criminal description leads to some disadvantageous consequences. Firstly, people who routinely and regularly watch programs and read articles in magazines that are full of bloody details and horrible nuances of crimes have become accustomed to this after a while. So, violence in its many forms becomes a new norm of life. Secondly, those who were involved in the gory events such as victims, survivors and their relatives may be hurt by unwanted public attention drawn to them by the publications. For instance, TV reporters and writers often pursue those who somehow suffered from violence and illegal actions and a young victim of a rape or a father of a killed daughter will be repeatedly asked to give interviews on the painful topics. Those are main disadvantages of the discussed trend.

On the other hand, demonstration and description of crimes on the screen and paper have some positive effects. Primarily, rising people’s awareness about actions and circumstances that provoke violence may tremendously help people to avoid being involved in such horrible events. To exemplify, if people knew that robbers usually break into houses that do not have a dog in the backyard or inside the home, the informed public would likely buy a dog to deter criminals. Furthermore, the publishing detailed info about committed crimes will likely attract people’s attention to the problematic situation and this wave of discontent will probably force politicians, government officials and police officers to take some actions to tackle the problem. Thus, the number of violent crimes committed will decrease. In other words, the discussed trend has some advantageous aftermaths.

In conclusion, although a detailed description of law violations has some shortages, the merits of this practice definitely outweigh them.

In recent decades, movies and TV series have been imported from other countries. Although some people believe foreign films and TV shows that affected many things in our lives, they also play an integral part in the development of every country. There are a number of reasons why local films and shows benefit a culture.

First, movies made by local people would help preserve the tradition and customs of their own culture. For instance, local programs such as Lunar New Year,..which reminds many young generations always remember the tradition of ethnic culture.

Second, producing more local films will enrich the cultural library. For example, film production involves many aspects of life such as education, economics, business, etc, enhancing views on culture and communication skills. On the other hand, imported movies and TV series bring a lot of advantages to a local culture. Firstly, when a country imported movies that are imported from overseas, it can help its people learn about other cultures in much easier and more effective way. In fact, it helps them broaden their own knowledge about different fields and communities through real experiences of people from other countries. Secondly, each individual can learn the good things from other civilized societies through their behavior and ways of working. For example, the habit of queuing is a beautiful habit in many Western countries, people can copy their action and apply this sort of knowledge in real life.

In conclusion, only focusing on producing local films and shows will do more harm than good. Local officials should also recognize the benefits of purchasing foreign movies on preserving their culture.

Today, technology has become an essential part of our work and life so much so that there is a dramatic increase in the number of tasks performed by robots. In my perspective, there are several economic and sociological reasons behind this positive development.

Firstly, people’s lifestyle has become more dynamic and demanding. That means people need to study and work more to achieve their progressive objectives. Consequently, people are relying more and more on technology to do the basic tasks such as house cleaning and food preparation. For example, the number of people in the USA who use cleaning robots such as ROMBA are rapidly increasing due to the abundant time savings. Hence, by using advanced technologies people can save time for working or studying and achieve their big goals.

Secondly, this demanding lifestyle has pushed people far from their families; which, in turn, afflicted their social connections due to the shortage of free time. Therefore, people are now employing robots to save time for their social life. For instance, people in Japan use robots to prepare their breakfast while they chat. Undoubtedly, that utilization of technology improves people’s social life significantly and invigorates their business networks. Thus, the usage of robots at work and home enables people to save time and use it for other more fulfilling tasks.

To sum up, advanced technology has reached people’s work and homes. This great development makes their life more comfortable and stimulates them to focus on their goals while robots do their daily tasks. I believe that such improvement is crucial to enhance people’s well-being.

According to one camp of scientists, messages should be sent to those aliens to confirm their existence; however, the other camp expresses concerns about hailing the attention of alien civilizations. I would delve into both the views in this essay.

Due of overexploitation, the earth is slowly becoming uninhabitable, to begin with. In the true spirit of exploration, astrobiologists want to explore the space for the existence of advanced life forms which would be beneficial for us in the future. Cosmologists like Stephen hawking consider this advancement in the search of intelligent lives may get to a period in our future where we outgrow our evolutionary baggage. Furthermore, a search of extraterrestrial civilizations will make us not only technologically more proficient than we are, but more aware of the rarity and preciousness of life in the cosmos.

On the other hand, there are a plethora of risks in contacting extraterrestrials scientists currently have no idea what alien life-forms might look like, or how they might respond to contact from human civilization. Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonize whatever planets they could reach. We don't know much about aliens, but we know about humans. If we look at history, contact between humans and less intelligent organisms have often been violent and have gone badly for the less advanced. A civilization reading one of our messages could be billions of years ahead of us. If so, they will be vastly more powerful, and may not see us as any more valuable than we see bacteria.

In conclusion, even though I fear that an advanced alien civilization would have no problem wiping out the human race, the desire for the search for life beyond earth outgrows the risks and I strongly agree that it would give us a commitment to live. We are alive. We are intelligent. We must search for the signs of life in this universe.

TEST 3

WRITING TASK 1

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

The diagram below shows how electricity is generated in a hydroelectric power station.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

The flow chart illustrates the working mechanism of hydroelectric power station. The whole process can be divided into two stages according to its different working modes in the daytime and at night.

In the first stage, the river flows into and accumulates in the high-level reservoir. In the daytime, the dam is open. By the effect of potential energy, water in the high-level reservoir will flow down into the power station, where reversible turbines are facilitated. The lash of water will operate reversible turbines, driving the connected generator to produce electricity. Under the transportation of power lines, the electricity will be delivered to National grid.

In the second stage, reversible turbines start to rotate backward at night, under whose mechanical energy, the water will be pumped up back to the high-level reservoir again. The intake of dam at that time will not be closed until all water is transported back to the reservoir.

After the re-accumulation of river water is completed, the dam will be closed until the whole electricity production starts the next day.

WRITING TASK 2

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Some people say that music is a good way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

1)To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion? 2)Is it positive or negative? 3)Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

As a traditional type of art, music has long been regarded as a perfect symbol of people’s aesthetic pursuit. Since the creation, performance, significance, and even the definition of music varies according to culture and social context, some people claim that people from different age groups and cultural backgrounds cannot appreciate the same kind of music, which I can hardly agree with.

The fact is that we indeed can frequently find people belonging to certain groups enjoy diversified types of music. For example, the young may be more inclined to appreciate popular music while senior citizens may favor classical or folk music more. Growing up in and experiencing features of different ages, people’s personality, interests as well as focuses may be quite distinctive from each other. Consequently, people’s appetite for music can hardly reach a consensus. It is understandable, hence, that a certain group of people support this view.

The magic and charm of music, however, should never be looked down upon. It can be widely observed that no matter in which age group, which kind of cultural context and which period of time, there are certain pieces of music compositions and works that can arouse the enthusiasm and affection of the general. There are hundreds of thousands of music masterpieces that have been appreciated by people throughout the history, such as those brilliant symphonies written by Beethoven and Tchaikovsky. The existence of those eternal music works clearly proves that music has the power to trigger empathy among the public.

What is more, driven by the interests into same types of music, people would naturally gather together to constitute certain groups or even organizations to enjoy their favorable music works together. Human beings are inborn group species, and they would unite together for the shared interests or targets which undoubtedly involve the music. That’s the reason why there are lots of fan clubs and musical organizations that are constituted by people from various cultures and age groups, in which each member can communicate with others without barriers.

In conclusion, although people possess different interests, music can bring them together.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

The two charts present changes in the value of exports as well as the percentage change in values of exports between 2015-2016. Five categories of exports include petroleum products (PP), engineered goods (EG), gems and jewelry (GJ), agricultural products (AG) and textiles. The value is calculated in billion dollars (BD).

As for the export earnings, increases in values can be observed in PP, EG, and textiles. Starting from 60BD, the value of PP increased to around 65BD in 2016. Likewise, the value of EG also grew by 8BD to nearly 63BD in 2016. The value of textiles jumped more obviously from around 25BD to 32BD during the two years. The value of exported AP, however, maintained almost unchanged at around 32BD. By contrast, the value of exported GJ decreased by 2BD, hitting 40BD in 2016.

In terms of percentage change in values, only the figure in GJ declined by 5.18%. The percentage in the value of textiles rose gigantically by 15.24%, nearly 1.8 times as that of EG. The percentage of value in PP grew by 3%, 2.19% more than the increase in the percentage of value in AP.

WRITING TASK 2

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience.

Write at least 250 words.

The sustainability of ecosystem, since directly determines the existence of all creatures on the Earth, has always drawn great concerns from all over the world. The booming population, however, together with the deterioration of environmental circumstances, have already threatened the maintenance of ecology. Some people claim that contemporarily the major environmental problem lies in the extinction of certain species, which I strongly agree with.

Diversified environmental problems can be observed nowadays, which are quite urgent to be solved, admittedly. The well being of not only human beings, but also all species on the Earth rely greatly on the healthy operation of ecosystem, hence even a tiny problem should not be overlooked. The shortage of natural resources, the prevailing of environmental pollutions, the unpredictable climate change are all imminent dangers to all living creatures. It is never too cautious to focus on those potential crises to the environment.

People have already taken countermeasures, however, to tackle the aforementioned problems. The healthy and environmentally-friendly lifestyle has been cultivated for years, while countless numbers of innovative technologies have been created in order to check and balance the present situation. Consequently, lots of previous problems have been at least soothed, while the extinction of species, no matter plants or animals, cannot be reversed. Once a specific type of creature is lost, it is almost impossible to save it back to the nature. Compared to other environmental problems, the loss of species is the one that human beings cannot solve up until now. Considering from this perspective, the emergency of this problem deserves more concentration.

What is more, one of the crucial aspects of natural balance is the co-existence of diversified species. Once a particular kind of animal or plant is lost, the survival of other species may also be hugely influenced. The birds, for example, have been assumed as the most resistive type of species because of their flying and stronger endurance capabilities. Due to the deterioration of forest environment and loss of plants, huge numbers of bird species have also been died out. Once an irreversible extinction has happened, potential threats may also approach.

In my opinion, all environmental problems should be given sufficient attention, however once an extinction of a species emerges, it is too late to make any remedies.

The plans below show a pubic park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

The maps show changes in the layout of the Grange Park, which stands between the Arnold Avenue and Eldon Street in 1920 and today.

In 1920, a stage for musicians could be observed in the center of the western area, with two rose gardens built to its north and south respectively. There were both two seats areas facilitated on each side of the two rose gardens, surrounding the stage altogether. In the middle of the park, a fountain could be found, while two entrances on the Arnold Avenue and Eldon Street located to the north and south of the fountain. In the eastern area, another rose garden stood next to the entrance on the Arnold Avenue, opposing to a Glasshouse in the south. There was a pond for water plants standing in the northeastern corner of the park, next to which another seats area was founded.

At present, several changes have taken place. The stage for musician is transformed into an amphitheater for concerts, while four seats areas and the rose garden in the south are all moved to the center of the park, with four seats areas surrounding the garden. Another rose garden at the east of the entrance is changed into a café, while the pond for water plants is transformed into a children’s play area. A water feature area replaces the glasshouse in the southern direction. What is more, an entrance to the underground car park is established on the original site of seats next to the pond.

Contemporary working modes have been gigantically reshaped under reforms of traditional concepts as well as increased social demands. As can be prevalently witnessed in many cities, especially metropolises around the world, an increasing number of people are becoming self-employed. Both the causes and possible negative influences will be further discussed in following paragraphs.

Various reasons can contribute to the present situation. First and foremost, the pursuit of personal ambition and dream has motivated people to escape from the shackle of ordinary companies. In traditional working modes, employees have to strive really hard to climb the career hierarchy, while they may spend more than half of their life to improve their status. By being the employers of themselves, people can spare no efforts to realize their own dreams. What is more, with the awakening of democratic consciousness, people nowadays are more aware of the personal freedom. In such contexts, many of them would not like to be constrained by the routine commuting life, and would rather hold the decision-making power at hand. Hence being self-employed gradually becomes one of the most favorable choices for people who value personal freedom. Under the influences of aforementioned elements, the emergence of such a phenomenon is quite understandable.

In terms of the possible disadvantages, on the one hand, people who are self-employed may face certain periods of instability. Compared to regular companies and enterprises, the client resources of those individual employers are quite unsteady, since those individual employers should take more efforts to establish a convincing image and reputation. Once the shortage of incomes occurs, people who are self-employed will confront tougher times to survive. On the other hand, more pressure will be exerted on shoulders of those individual employers. In order to maintain the healthy operation of business, people who run their own companies should strive against all odds no matter in competing with rival companies or managing their own employees. As a result, they must undertake stresses they will never face when they are employed by large companies. Without proper mental and physical regulation, their health might be further hampered under such an intense state.

The causing effects of being self-employed are quite diverse and it is really significant for people who want to be self-employed to think twice before making this decision.

The three pie charts demonstrate average proportions of sodium, saturated fats and added sugars in typical meals eaten in the USA. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks are involved in investigated meals.

As for the absorption of sodium, nearly half of sodium is taken in dinner (43%), which is 14% larger than the share of sodium consumed in lunch. Breakfast and snacks both contain 14% of the sodium, half of the share of sodium in lunch.

In terms of saturated fat, the share of it in dinner still ranks the first at 37%, followed by the figure in lunch at 26%. There is 21% of saturated fat in snacks, 5% larger than the figure in breakfast.

For added sugar, its percentage in snacks is the largest at 42%, quite close to the share of sodium in dinner. The share of added sugar in dinner is 19% less than that in snacks, which is the same to the figure of sugar in lunch. Only 16% of added sugar can be found in breakfast.

In conclusion, except added sugar, dinner contains the largest proportion of sodium and saturated fat compared to other three types of meals.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Pessimists commonly believe that people are destined to confront situations the fate has determined for them, which they have no choice but to accept. While optimists are always trying their best to make breakthroughs in order to improve their life quality. From my perspective, taking actions to make a change is always better than adhering to the present status quo.

A prompter coordination of personal state can be realized by simply accepting a bad situation, admittedly. Trapped in embarrassing or negative circumstances, the first and foremost step is to prevent ourselves from being harmed physically or mentally. If one can ease when confronting problems or cannot achieve expectations, at least his or her inner feelings will not be that greatly impacted, which can avoid irregular performances in their routine life. For example, if an employee can accept an unsatisfactory job, it is more possible for him or her to fulfill given tasks compared with employees who would frequently complain their discontent towards their positions.

Considering from a long term, however, merely adopting bad situations cannot prevent the emergence of new problems. Even though people may be peaceful at the dilemma, the society remains changing constantly, pushing unpredictable challenges and new perishing conditions to them, when people will find it tougher to make simple concession. By contrast, for people who actively make improvements to tackle difficulties, they are more motivated and better prepared for any unexpected circumstances, thus it is highly possible for them to endure sufferings and reverse the tide.

In my opinion, an increasing amount of knowledge and experience can be accumulated during the process of improving and challenging. In order to get rid of negative situations, people should resort to methods and techniques they may not be acquainted with before, thus before challenging unpleasant problems, what people should do at first is to enhance their own capabilities and strengthen their endurance. It is during this process that these risk takers can better equip themselves and compared to those mere take-it-for-granted accepters, people who are willing to make a change can dope out more and swifter ideas to be final conquerors.

In conclusion, although people who accept bad situations can gain instant comforts, it is better to make improvements.

WRITING TASK 1

You should spend abo

20 minutes on this task.

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in and in .

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

SAMPLE ANSWER

This is an answer written by a candidate who achieved a Band 5.5 score. Here is the examiner’s comment:

The candidate has identified all the key features (hospital, ring road, new public car park, staff car park and bus station in 2010) but the descriptions are not always accurate e.g. [two features that still remained. This two features are City Hospital and staff carpark] whereas the staff car park was formerly a car park for both staff and public, while the mention of the bus station is not developed. Organisation is clear, however, with some good use of cohesive devices [According to | Apart from | The further additional features], although there is an error in the use of reference pronouns [This/These two features]. The range of vocabulary is sufficient for the task [two different years | features | remained | additional], though [features] is over-used. A spelling error is noted in the second line [sourrounded] but this does not cause any difficulty for the reader; similarly, the use of [around-turn] can be easily understood as ‘roundabout’. There is a mix of simple and complex sentences, mainly used accurately.

Two maps illustrate, the way to get to a city hospital of two different years (2007 and 2010).

According to both maps, the main features which is city hospital is sourrounded by Ring Road. In these two maps, there have been two features that still remained. This two features are City Hospital and staff car park. Apart from these two features there are some features that shows on 2010 map but haven’t shown on 2007 map. The additional features that appear on the map of 2010 are public car parte which located on the east-side of the city hospital. The further additional features are two around-turn on the hospital Rd. which can lead to the bus station.

Overall, there are two major features that never change on both 2007 and 2010 map. These features are city hospital and staff car park. However, there are some additional features that appear on the map of 2010 but not on 2007. These features are public car park, bus station and two around-turns.

WRITING TASK 2

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Living in a country where you have to speak a foreign language can cause serious social problems, as well as practical problems.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

SAMPLE ANSWER

This is an answer written by a candidate who achieved a Band 6.5 score. Here is the examiner’s comment:

The candidate deals with both parts of the prompt and addresses some social and practical problems that might be experienced in a foreign language environment. Ideas are supported by examples, though there is room for further development here. Organisation is logical and there is clear progression throughout the response. Cohesive devices are used appropriately [Another problem | For example | Therefore | That means ... | The second ... problem | To summarize]. There is a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision and to demonstrate awareness of style and collocation [language barrier | linked to | influence the behaviour | offend | misunderstanding | misconceptions]. There is a mix of simple and complex sentence forms including subordinate clauses [which means that | a person who], modal verbs [should | might | would] and gerunds [finding a job]. Grammatical control is generally good as is the use of punctuation, although the first sentence in the second paragraph is incomplete.

It is clear that living in a foreign country has its own benefits and drawbacks to consider. I agre with this statement, however I think that anybody coming in another country should respect national culture. In this essay, I would like to outline the social and practical problems.

The social problems would be language barrier, which means that a person coming from another country might not be able to speak and understand the language which might be a problem as far a person who is living in a country, and a person who came in the country. Another problem is linked to the language barrier, but it might influence the behaviour of others. An individual who come into the country might offend others with their behaviour or language. For example; some cultures like English people prefer to be very polite and say things differently from other cultures. Therefore a person who doesn’t know how to behave in a particular culture might offend others around him.

The practical problems would be misunderstanding of culture. That means that a person who visits other countries does not understand other culture and he behaves as he wants to.

The second practical problem is finding a job. An individual who works in foreign country might not be appropriate for people who he serves. For example if an individual works in a restaurant, the people who live in a country and they were born in that country might not respect and not like the behaviour of a person who works in a restaurant, it might be because, the cultures are different.

To summarise, it can be said that there are a lot of misconceptions which people have when they come in a foreign country, and in try opinion and from my personal experience people should educate themselves in order to know how to behave in different situations with different cultures.

In this highly competitive world, acquiring a variety of skills has become far more important than ever before. It is argued that people gain more necessary abilities through participating in a variety of group work, compared with the individual one. From my perspective, skills gained from both types of activities are equally essential.

On the one hand, what people are able to learn by teamwork is meaningful. Firstly, by cooperating and working together with other participators, people are able to gain a better understanding of how to collaborate with others, an important quality that can facilitate to achieve career success. Another essential ability people can develop from group activities is communication skill. Whatever the group work is, playing football, basketball or doing a scientific research, it requires participants to communicate and socialize with others from diverse backgrounds especially when they hold different perspectives. People with strong social skills can adapt to a new environment more quickly and are more likely to access good resources from their friends wherever they are.

Nevertheless, the importance of individual activities is not supposed to be neglected and performing a task separately contributes extraordinarily to cultivating people’s critical and independent thinking. Individuals, when completing a mission or project alone, have no one to turn to but are forced to work out the most appropriate method to address the difficulty they are faced with. A person who plays chess game on the computer, for example, needs to consider carefully the merits and demerits of each step so as to win finally even when being at a disadvantage. It can help people better deal with their adult life for the thinking ability is one of the most indispensible qualities to deal with various challenges encountered in both workplace and daily life.

In conclusion, both working as a number in a team and completing a task individually are advantageous since only in this way can they grow into well-rounded individuals who have a wide range of interests and skills.

The bar chart compares 4 categories of domestic waste in terms of their recycling proportion in one specific city over a decade from1992 to 2002.

Generally, it can be seen that the household sectors had relatively low recycling rates in 1992 especially for plastic as merely 11% of it was collected. The remaining three kinds of trash including cans, paper and glass stood at an almost equal percentage 13%.

Five years later, the situation turned better off. There was a moderate increase in the amount of plastic and paper reused. While the rise was particularly noticeable in glass which nearly doubled in its recycling, a slight drop was actually found in cans.

The following half decade witnessed an overall upward trend except plastic which kept constant at about 12%. More cans and paper were recycled, with the proportion reaching more than 20% and almost 30% respectively. Also noteworthy is that glass remained the principal waste materials, approaching to as high as one half.

Overall, the gap between these waste recycling had enlarged in these years and while the vast quantities of glass and paper were recycled , plastic and cans remained unpopular.

Nowadays, many employers think that social skills are as important as good qualifications for employing people. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It is important for job seekers to highlight both their professional qualifications and social skills. Employers are looking to hire those who have the right mix of professional qualifications as hard skills and social skills as soft skills.

(2) Highlight

(3) Professional

(4) Look to do...

(5) Mix 混合

On the one hand, hard skills are most important to any job, and the expertise required to do a job is always listed in job postings and job descriptions. That is why those job seekers with perfect certifications and licenses are preferred by their potential employers, for they indicate that their owners possess the sought-after knowledge and abilities.Without them, landing an interview or even getting past applicant tracking systems will become next to impossible. After all, in the job market, nothing can beat the importance of hard skills.

(2) Expertise

(3) Job description

(4) Potential

(5) Sought-after 急需的

(6) Next to impossible

(7) Nothing can beat the importance of...

Soft skills, on the other hand, are emotional abilities that are useful for an individual to stand out among other job applicants. While hard skills can be learned through proper training, soft skills are harder to develop. And this partly explains why soft skills are extremely valuable these days. Indeed, such emotional traits are so valuable that almost every employer looks for job candidates who are skilled in identifying emotions, using emotions, and regulating emotions. With good soft skills, one is able to connect emotionally with his/her co-workers, clients and superiors as one will look and feel more comfortable and therefore more confident and efficient in job situations.

(2) Stand out 突出

(3) Partly 部分地

(4) Valuable

(5) Identify 识别

(6) Regulate 调节

(7) Superior 上级

In conclusion, the two types of skills are not mutually exclusive as both of them are equally important in the job market. As far as employment is concerned, there is no “either/or” question since the answer must necessarily be both.

(2) Mutually exclusive

(3) Employment 工作

(4) Necessarily

A successful person is equipped with diverse qualities such as friendly personality and problem-solving capacity. Some people contend that students fail to learn those qualities in a university or academic institutions. From my perspective, some of qualities can be acquired in higher education.

On one hand, two outstanding qualities could be learned in universities. The first one is to specialize in a certain field. One of aims of university education is to impart professional knowledge and principles to students. In other words, through learning systematic courses of their majors, students are expected to be proficient in understanding and applying theoretical knowledge, forming the basis of a promising career path in the future. Critical thinking ability is another significant quality. Universities are learning communities where knowledge is not disseminated but also advanced. As member of this community, college students are not information recipients; instead, they are encouraged to challenge and think critically to achieve their potential and skills. A case in the point is that, in a language teaching class, the professor may require those potential teachers to discuss the topic that whether situational teaching methodology (which is commonly deemed as a more effective method of language teaching) is better than rote memorization. It is the critical thinking that assists students in having comprehensive coverage of issues and overcoming obstacles efficiently.

On the flip side, other qualities successful persons have can not be gained in academic institutions, among which the essential one is the higher level of social skill. Generally, there is no relevant curricula set up by universities; in consequence, it is less likely for students to enhance such skill via knowledge learning. What’s more, self-study and independent learning, which serve as the backbone in university campus life, diminish the opportunities for learners to interact with peers and mentors. In addition, kindness, mercy, modesty, integrity and other noble characters are mostly formed by parents’ guidance and role models rather than university education.

In conclusion, as far as I am concerned, higher education cultivates students into specialized talents and develops their critical thinking, enabling them to obtain several but not all qualities that a person needs to become truly successful.

Success, an expected good result that a person may reach, is dedicated by various qualities including personal characters, knowledge accumulation, and cooperative spirit. That universities or colleges could educate such qualities for a person to succeed is a too narrow belief.

To begin with, individual personalities and characters are the initial keys to potential achievements, as the road to success is full of thorns, requiring the person to be prepared for optimism, calmness, and perseverance to strike the hedge and step forward to the established goals. These characters, in fact, are formed based on the influences from families, schools, and wider societies during the self-development process, which cannot be learnt at once or in any single place.

The second key is knowledge base. Knowledge is widely regarded as one of the most powerful competences for a person to make a difference, but knowledge and information storage is built and developed in accumulation, starting from antenatal training, then to babbling, and moving on to receiving basic educations at primary and secondary schools. In other words, learning knowledge needs a solid foundation. Without the paved footstone, university and academic study would be as unrealistic as a castle in the air.

Further, the sense of being collaborative plays an indispensable role. Only when an individual learns and knows how to effectively interacts and coordinates with others at growth can he or she acquire parents’ support, teachers’ guidance, and friends’ coordination---the important sources to help the person to become successful. Thus, it would be too late if a person starts learning such quality at university.

University education is the final stage of formal learning after secondary schoolings. This means, university is the place where students could further enhance and strengthen the key qualities, regardless of personal characters, knowledge system, or cooperative consciousness via more professional and well-focused instructions and assignments; rather a kindergarten for nurturing baby learners.

The qualities a person needs to become truly successful cannot be learned at a university or similar academic institution. To what extent do you agree or disagree? ?

The purpose of higher education has been a topic of debate for decades. While some claim that there are many successful people without a college degree, I believe education can have an overall impact on one's life.

Completing increasingly advanced levels of education shows that a persor has a drive and commitment to learn and apply information, ideas and theo ries to achieve a variety of tasks and goals. Many employers require col ege-level education, even for roles which previously did not require it, such as administrative assistant positions. It is true that the fewer years of educa tion one has completed, the fewer doors are open to him. Educational re quirements are quick and easy way to narrow down the field of applicants.especially in situations where there are more applicants than jobs. Wher hiring from a field of candidates, employers prefer whose who have com pleted the higher level of education.

More importantly, universities focus on preparing individuals for productive contribution to mankind by the creation of prepared minds. Universities are earning communities where knowledge is not only disseminated but also advancedAs members of this community, students are not information re cipients who acquire the knowledge in a passive way; instead, they are challenged to achieve their potential and indeed to excel. Therefore, univer sities provide learning conditions that encourage students to remain curi ous, to value diversity in opinions and perspectives, and to think critically and communicate effectively. In this way, students can gain problem-solv ing experience and confidence, which contributes to the development of their abilities and personalities.

Being successful without the experience of going to a university is possible, out to most of us the pursuit of educatión is paramount to our future success in today's world.

The qualities a person needs to become truly successful cannot be learned at a university or similar academic institution. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

The chart below shows the average time 16-22-year olds spent on playing video games in four different countries between 1992 and .Summarize the details. Select and report the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

让我们先来看一下3w(when, where, what)。

The bar chart compares the amount of time spent on video games on average by youngsters aged between 16-22 years old from four countries in two years 1992 and 2002.

It is evident that in 1992, the largest amount of time (85 hours) allocated to video games was from young people in country B. This was narrowly followed by country C and country A where respectively 78 hours and 76 hours were spent while it took the minimal hours for this age group to play video games in country D, standing at merely 50.

These youngsters increasingly relied on video games to relax themselves as there was an overall upward trend in total time ten years later. A two-hour rise could be noticed in both country A and country B, with the latter one still ranking the top. Despite of a considerable increase by 8 hours, video games still attracted the least attention of young people in country D and it is country C that was the only one which witnessed a slight drop by 1 hour.

In summary, in three of the four countries, teenagers and younger adults tended to devote more time playing video games over the decade.

Many employers think that social skills are as important as good qualifications for employing people. To what extent do you agree that social skills are as important as good qualifications for success in the job?

Regarding how social skills and qualifications contribute to a person's success in the career, I think both factors are equally important.

Academic qualifications cannot be acquired without many years of study and continued practice, so they reflect a person's academic background and mastery of specialized knowledge and skills. Many employers require job applicants to possess a certain level of qualification, which is an important criterion to evaluate whether the applicant is qualified for the position or not. Therefore, a high-level academic qualification obtained in a renowned university can bring a person more opportunities in the/job market and a good starting point in his or her path towards career success. In addition to this, people have also become increasingly aware of the importance of social skills in the workplace. Those with sophisticated social skills can develop and maintain good relationships with colleagues. With mutual support and active interaction, employees tend to have higher efficiency and enjoy their working lives. This is particularly important in today's society, where employees often face complicated tasks that require close cooperation among different departments. Also, good social skills enable/people to establish wide connections at work and in life, directly associated with their performance in some occupations. For example, a sociable salesman, even though he may not possess very high qualification, can sign more contracts than those who are not good at Socializing with others.

Overall, there is no doubt that good academic qualifications are important in job-hunting and personal development. However, since communicating and cooperating with others have become an essential part in the workplace, social skills should also be highly valued.

academic institutions.

Some companies attach equal importance to both social skills and academic qualifications when hiring new employees. In my opinion, education is the main prerequisite for achieving a successful career in this knowledge-intensive world.

First, higher education provides the basis for accessing top companies. It is not difficult to understand that job seekers must spend considerable amounts of time, money and energy to obtain their professional qualifications. This is why most employers value academic qualifications, as such eligibility means applicants have mastered more precise and professional knowledge. Without this competence, no chance could be acquired to enter the interview level. Second, after they are employed, expertise obtained from alma mater can make them work more efficient. For example, once a candidate from a normal college becomes a teacher, solid foundations like teaching methods and educational psychology helps him easily adapt into the workplace.

Nonetheless, I also have to insist that social skills do play a very important role to support one’s career success. For example, some interior designers with great interpersonal skills can accurately figure out what their customers like in their future home, including stylistic preferences, color matching and decorations. Furthermore, such tendency can hardly be learned through attending academic institutions. In addition, team spirit is indispensable during one’s career. Due to globalization, many successful cases are achieved because of cooperation. Hence, better social skills add positive opportunities and great possibilities for most individuals’ success.

In conclusion, academic qualifications and social skills are essential for a bright career. However, in terms of importance, the former is more vital than the latter considering the competitiveness in the labor force.

While humans have made strides economically and technologically, the natural environment has become increasingly vulnerable as people cut down trees, pollute the air, water and soil. Therefore, encouraging them to assume the responsibility for protecting and preserving their own environment locally seems to be feasible but is unrealistic indeed.

If the government persuades its citizens to take care of their environment at the local level, some environmental problems will then be solved. Only if every individual in different areas choose to lead a low carbon lifestyle , for example driving less but taking public transport more and using less disposable products but reusing and recycling more, the air will be cleaner and resources on which we thrive consumed if all individuals just continue to damage the environment and take no action to change, the environment in which they reside and live will become a uninhabitable place. Without cooperation with different groups at the local level, the environment will hardly be improved.

But only pushing people to conserve the environment locally cannot address all environmental problems fundamentally. For example, the energy crisis has recently been a tricky problem for most countries, a problem that is so complex that it is beyond an individual’s ability to deal with. This is mainly because developing clean and renewable energy costs money and resources and because a growing number of environmental problems are no longer confined to a certain region or country.

Even worse, a majority of people are reluctant to adopt the solutions the government has proposed. The major reason is that many people consider the environment problem as a future concern. Some environment problems, such as climate change, may need to be tackled even after a century. Time and money is better invested in coping with immediate problems such as house shortage and traffic jam than in preventing a disaster that is only expected to happen in the future.

In conclusion, workable as it seems , inducing people to defend their own local environment not only fails to be an effective solution but is difficult to make this goal a reality in real life and in addition to individual efforts, other measures are also necessary especially when the environment problems is caused by a combination of factors, many of which are too big for an individual to resolve.

In this digital age, traditional teaching modes are being replaced by technology-based ones. Textbooks, which seem less appealing to students, are advised to give way for electronic teaching tools such as video games and films. As far as I am concerned, I partly disagree with this assertion.

There is no denying that learning with multimedia contributes to improving learning effect. A case in the point is that, historical stories on the book may read boring as there are merely names of places, portraits of ancient emperors as well as date when events happened. In contrast, through a video or documentary, the scenes, objects and the facial expressions of great figures are depicted in a vivid and dynamic way, arousing students’ interest and reinforcing their understanding of historical knowledge.

Nevertheless, printed materials are not supposed to be removed in education. The most obvious reason is that reading facilitates the development of imagination. While reading poetry, novels and other literary works, students can visualize the artistic conception, scenery and appearance of heroes in their mind. Providing that the class was taught with TV dramas or movies, this ability would be undermined as the information will be directly presented on the screen and seen in the same way by all viewers. Another significant point is that reading contents on textbook is conducive to enhance student’s language skills. Unlike watching films, readers are required to pay attention to the grammar, context and coherence of a passage, all of which are vital for writing skills.

In conclusion, even though it is justified to apply technology to modern education, I still advocate books should continually be used in imparting knowledge as they play significant roles in certain subjects and cultivating children into all-round individuals.

Some people say that children should go to school as young as possible, while others believe that children should not start primary school until they are six or seven-years-old. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

There is much debate about when the transition between play-based preschool and the start of formal schooling should begin. For different purposes, the formal school starting age varies from country to country, ranging from four to seven.

Some people believe that “earlier is better”. On the one hand, children who receive formal instructions at four to five years old will hold advantages over those who start school at six to seven, since formal education can supply a good foundation for children, promoting them to form their own ideas, communicate and socialize with other students, and develop their knowledge. On the other hand, it may also make it possible for parents to return to the workforce earlier and reduce childcare costs.

Other people, however, argue that there will be negative consequences if children are forced to receive formal instruction at too early an age. This argument calls for an extension of informal, play-based preschool for the start of formal schooling to be delayed until the age of six to seven. If children are brought into school very young and then they are asked to behave in ways they cannot, they may become problem children later. Abundant evidence has shown that many of improper behaviors stem from starting school too early. In the interests of children’s academic achievements and emotional well-being, these evidence should be taken seriously.

In conclusion, although some people think that children should start formal schooling at four to five, others believe that it should be delayed until six to seven. The decision depends on each country’s primary-school educational policy. In many parts of the world, this issue continues to be debatable about which policy is more likely to pay off.
